Edison Elementary school, in the heart of the Fernside district will, be starting the 2012/2013 school year on August 27. Edison has issued its list of suggested school supplies for students from kindergarten to fifth grade. In addition to the list of supplies, students should have a standard size backpack which is large enough to hold folder 8.5 X 11 and larger. Each student should have the backpack labeled with their name.

The land where Edison now stands was originally Edgar Cohen’s home and estate. Cohen’s father, Alfred A. Cohen was an early Alameda pioneer who owned the San Francisco and Alameda Railroad. He also owned the large estate which would eventually became the Fernside District. The board of education purchased the Edgar Cohen estate to build a new school. Unfortunately there were not enough funds left to build the school. It wasn’t until 1940 that WPA funds became available to build the school. Edison was finally opened on September 14, 1942.
