If You Are Going To Split Hairs - Do It On The Side Of Caution.

If the need arises that you need to split hairs, take a minute, pause and re-boot. There are so many things to get angry about, and fly off the handle. Perhaps it may be just your personality not to be that forgiving, on every occasion. If this is the case, take your stand, but do it in a way that remains professional. You never know when you will meet this person or situation again.

Splitting hair - what does that mean my daughter asked yesterday.  I said it means to try to make petty distinctions, to argue about whether details that are not important are exactly correct, to argue about very small differences or unimportant details.

People will split hairs over the silliest things - words, phrases, statements.  Here are some examples, when someone says:

...you are forty-five minutes late for an appointment, you are splitting hairs to say that you were really only forty minutes late.

..."the pay is two times more" and you say, "actually it's two and a half times more"

..."that has a great taste" and you say, "actually, has great flavor".

As was the case over a home property report.  I was "sort of" complaining to my husband about the other agent who was challenging every word I used to say, "Let's focus on the big items and tackle the smaller ones later."  It was exhausting to hear the agent challenge that a home owner wrote the AC unit was six years old, when in fact, the inspection indicated it was six years and 8 months old causing it to be nearly seven, which makes its lifespan....blah blah!  Right?  You get the point.

If you plan to split hairs over things anyway - make sure you do it on the side of caution.  Be careful that you don't lose sight of the big picture because you want to be right about a word, a phrase, or whatever your position is.  When you split hairs, people won't want to work with you.

If you are faced with someone who is like this - a few tips:

  • Just ignore whatever petty issue they are quibbling over.  The AC example above, my response to him was, "OK .. next topic."
  • Rise above the pettiness. Don't argue, don't split hairs back, just press on and be polite.
  • Stay focused, pay attention to what needs attention and go back to the first tip, ignore the rest.

Winston, one of my early bosses told me to be nice to people on the way up because you never know who you will meet on the way down.
