Science says put your blogs on Twitter and reap the benefits.  Bryan Robertson say so, so it must be true. Well maybe that isn’t exactly what Bryan posted.  He did say that researchers at UCLA and HP Labs show that blogs rank high for a chance of being retweeted. And don’t we all want to be retweeted and then have our blogs go viral.

Via Bryan Robertson, Real estate broker Los Altos & Silicon Valley Luxury Homes (Sereno Group):

Do you post your blogs on Twitter?  Well you should be.  It turns out that "blogs" are the #5 source of popular tweets on Twitter.  A PhD candidate at UCLA and two HP lab researchers came up with an algorithm that predicts whether or not a tweet will "go viral" and become popular.  A tweet is considered popular if it has more than 100 tweets (or retweets) linked to it.  An unpopular tweet has less than 20 links.

One aspect of the study was on the language used in the article.  Whether emotionally charged or simply explanatory text, neither seemed to have much impact on the number of tweets an article got.  This belies what most of us have been taught which is that a hot topic gets lots of activity.  Perhaps that's true with headlines but apparently not with articles on Twitter.

What does help is the source of the article.  Popular sites such as Mashable have a much greater chance at being successfully retweeted than articles from The Christian Science Monitor.  What's really interesting is that "blogs" as a major topic category rank #5 on the list behind technology, fun stuff, health, and programming.  This means that blogging and then posting a blog on Twitter has a better chance of being retweeted than an article written about the stock market from the NY Times.

Think about that...your blog could be more heavily tweeted than something from a major media outlet.

That's powerful stuff!

Take a look at the original article to read about the algorithm and the details behind it.
