The disclosure below recently appeared on Craigslists web site. Google / research the current lawsuit Craigslist has decided to file against padmapper.com. I'm not an attorney, but I think this new policy of craigslist should be reviewed by agents placing ads on cl.

*"If you’re going to list an item on Craigslist, you better not advertise it anywhere else. In an effort to suffocate competing sites, the online classifieds website says your listings are now exclusive to Craigslist, barred from re-posting.Clicking ‘continue’ confirms that Craigslist is the exclusive licensee of this content, with the exclusive right to enforce copyrights against anyone copying, republishing, distributing, or preparing derivative works without it's consent."

*"Clicking ‘continue’ confirms that Craigslist is the exclusive licensee of this content, with the exclusive right to enforce copyrights against anyone copying, republishing, distributing, or preparing derivative works without its consent.”

So what does this mean? I don't use craigslist that much anyway, but if I did place a lot of my listings and photographs on cl, would I want them to have the exclusive license on how my cl listings are used? I don't think so. I just don't like the sound of this new policy.

hmmmmmmmmm - interesting. If I change just a few words in the CL ad, then I can use the same basic ad elsewhere??

I bet this is really done to protect Craigslist more than anything since their ads have hijacked and faked by bad guys.

The competition to make a buck is picking up speed here....Many companies are pressured to take their small print to new heights....Pretty soon, the Internet will go full cirlce and then perhaps the old fashioned way of doing business will return..fact to face

#31- hi Gita, I'm not really ue what their intent is, but I think they could word it differently.

#32- Hi Phil, it does sound scary when first read, and I can see where people would hesitate to push " continue" after reading this.

#33- Hi Michael, It's at least worth checking out to see what CL's intent really is.

#34- Hi Fernando, You're welcome. Thanks for leaving that $100.00 bill inside of your combo box on your new short sale listing. Maybe now people can find your listings easier!

#35- Hi Raymond, It might be good in some ways, but others ways it sounds a little scary if people are'nt clear on what it really means.

#36- Hi Kristin, In this area CL ds aren't that effective from waht I've seen and heard. it is a continuos source of info for scammers.

#37- Hi John, Hmm, maybe linking to cl is something they don't approve of? I guess it depends on how you are using their content.

#38- Hi Travis, It might not make much difference for many users, but we'll have to see how it plays out.

#39- Poster unidentified?

#40- Hi Roger, maybe, and the scammers are going to use the info on CL no matter what. Maybe this will give CL a stronger legal postion when they go after people that are using their content in the wrong way?

#41- Hi Richie, Yeah, it jsut seems like we have to constantly monitor everything we do, and every company we do business with.

Hi Jeff, thanks for the heads up.  Can anyone confirm it to be accurate?

Wow.  This could be a really scary thing if it's true.  I'll keep my eyes open.

#43- Hi Terry, I don't use CL much anymore either. I get better resluts from other places.

#44- Hi Bob, It's true. If you go to CL to post a listing. Just go through the steps as if you were posting, and on about the 4th or 5th step of the process you'll see the disclosure at bottom of page.

#45- Hi Charlie, See my replt to #44. It's something we should check out and verify how it will affect us.

Just one more reason not to use CL anyway, don't you think?

I am like a lot of the members here...I use to use CL, but not any more.

CL is a good place to sell a vehicle or house hold appliances, but I don't think I have ever sold any real estate off a CL ad. ( I have been posting on CL since day 1).

Thanks for the warning Jeff, I cant imagine that this will be enforceable, not to mention the magnitude of policing the violators.

Thanks for the update on Craigs list.  I have never done much with CL...it just never seemed to work in my area.

I do agree with Richie #41.  It is better to do some things face to face.  Especially when money is involved,

So I post 50+ ads a week & this has to be a new thing since the recent change over.  They've added a few new things including a total of 8 photos if anyone cares.  I find it a good tool & buyers are there in droves which all my tracking confirms.  MORE BUYERS COME FROM THERE THAN Z & T (I'm not mentioning these idiots names BTW).  It USED TOO be spammy & there were many scrapers.  I am assuming that this is for all those folks that were scraping your listings.  I know that there are terrible rental scams & scraping. Pay attention to your listings & your name no matter where you advertise your listings.

I will say with my own personal experience CL is like being out in the wild west of the internet.  You're on your own & you should know what you are doing!

Recently, I contacted a few agents with listings in an area I wanted to farm. I asked permission to post the listing with some of the photos.  2 agents said yes and one said no.  I'm beginning to think I shouldn't have done this!  We have a great CL template that looks amazing, but I didn't get any business calls from it.  All I received was companies trying to sell me their services.  Done with CL and especially after reading the above comments.  Thanks for posting this!

From #20 above, Bart writes:

"Craiglist much like Activerain is liable for ensuring that copyrighted material does not find it's way onto their site."

I disagree with Bart.  I believe that ActiveRain members are responsible for what they post to their blog.  If ActiveRain had "libility" of everything that 120,.000 members post, the cost of compliance would be prohibitive.

#47- Hi Morris, I never had many reasons to use craigslist to begin with. Most contacts from CL were just time wasters.

#48- Hi Rebecca, That seems to be the trend.

#49- All Star- I actually placed an ad on CL yesterday, but I don't expect any calls from it.

#50- Hi Bob, I agree. It would be almost impossible to monitor. They are probaby going after people that are creating other businesses using CL content. I don't know if papmapper was earning $ or not using CL content to create apps?

#51- Hi Karen, Face to face can be much better than non serious leads from CL and the internet.

#52- Hi Lyn, CL works well in certain areas ( like college towns and crowded cities) for example, by seems like many areas it just hasn't caught on. This could be just to strenghen CL's legal position when going after violators. You're right, each agent should know what they are doing when placing ads anywhere.

#53- Hi Jan, I think lots of agentss are done with CL, or they just go back and forth trying it every now and then. I doubt too many businesses suffer from not placing ads on CL.

#54- Hi Lenn, I agree, the people placing the ads are the ones responsible for ensuring the content in not protected by copyright. Even MRIS has no way of knowing if photos placed in virtual tours on their site have been taken from another agents listing. The violators are the ones that are liable. " Ignorance of the law is not a defense" as they saying goes."

#56- Hi Marsha, It would be nice if they included an explantion of what their disclosure means.

#57- Hi Gene, Even without this new disclosure, i wasn't that happy with results from CL anyway. I just tried a site that is very similar to craigslist. www.kijiji.com, or www.ebayclassifieds.com. I'm making another attempt with www.backpage.com as well and see what kind of results I get get from those.
