Or, Why People Succeed in Business, any Business.

I doubt there are many real estate agents who succeed in real estate who have not succeeded, by any measure, in prior jobs.

IMO, it isn't the business or the job in which they succeed.

They succeed because they have the drive, skill level required, motivation and dedication to SUCCEED in any job.

It's not "real estate".  It's YOU!!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Via Dan Dee McGinnis (Homesmart International):
Having had a real estate licenses for over 32 years, and starting out in Columbus Ohio in 1978, I was fortunate enough by working only part time in real estate to sell 12 homes in six months. Many years later I learned the average agent sells four homes a year! Too bad I did not learn that in the first few months I had that license in Ohio.
Now after over 32 years as a real estate agent in Arizona, and having helped hundreds and hundreds of people buy and sell homes and attempting to assist about a dozen people mentoring them in real estate sales, and only one of them ever made it... I feel I understand WHY PEOPLE SUCCEED IN REAL ESTATE SALES. You notice I did not say: Why people fail in real estate sales.
The reason people succeed in real estate sales has nothing to do with education. After all I failed the exam in Ohio once and in Arizona twice. Why people succeed in real estate sales is their DESIRE! Think about it even with the Olympics you can see in those winners with the gold metal it shows in their eyes, in their face in their body, the DESIRE!
When you meet someone who is successful in real estate sales, ask them how their desire level in the field is? Actually that just may be the #1 question for a potential seller or buyer to ask in interviewing real estate agents now that I think about it. "Tell me about your level of desire for real estate sales." And then: SHUT UP! And LISTEN. That is a question that gives the agent an opportunity to "sell" and an opportunity to show the potential customer or client if this is the person who has the level of DESIRE in getting my home sold. Even if they don't know how to market or what to do to sell a home, if they convey a strong level of desire, they will go ask others how to sell. But if you know how to market and do not have the DESIRE. Well you get my point I am sure by now.
Why people succeed in real estate sales.
I am never too busy for your referrals
I think following up and not being afraid to make that call is very important. Real Estate is different than a lot of occupations. I have seen many people that have done well in several lines of work only to fail in sales.
Lenn - It is a really good field for those who have succeeded in other fields and as Dan say, have the desire to succeed at real estate.  It is a tough business, so you have to have a strategy for how you are going differentiate yourself from other agents and a reason for clients to choose you over others.  Over time, you build a track record and gain momentum, so that you do not have to generate every lead from scratch.  I have seen people work really, really hard in this business and fail because they did not have a strategy.
Thank you! I can't tell you how many years I worked for a big name real estate company and they told me I cannot reach my goals in selling real estate.  All these years I thought what they were saying was the homes weren't selling here for enough money to reach my goals.  What they were really saying is THEY couldn't sell that many homes because THEY DIDN'T HAVE THE DESIRE TO DO SO! It now makes sense...
Do you mean that the home inspection industry does not earn my income for me?  What?
Next you'll say the gubment doesn't give me free benefits...  like health care.
I totally agree with your assessment as to why people succeed in real estate ... or any business for that matter.  Adding to your comment, I recently read an article that said the one thing truly successful people had in common was ... "gratitude."  Makes sense to me :)
It's never the market, it's the marketing. It's not the line of business, it's the Realtor. No matter what it is you do, if you have the desire to succeed, you will.
Maybe because those people hustle their butt off. The same is true of leadership. If a person is a leader, he will be a leader in everything he does.
Hi Lenn, I think that's a great observation.  I see new agents in my office take years to get rolling and never do and then I see young energetic bucks make it onto the top10 board within a few months "overnight" - I am also excited to agree that it's "them" and their drive and burning desire than anything else.
