Gone, But Forever Remembered On A Highway Marker

By
Real Estate Agent with RE/MAX Executives

Old Bethel School Location

No, the Mobil1 Lube Express is still there - I am talking about what it replaced .

We have been using this oil change facility for "eons" even though there is a modern Jiffy Lube just a few blocks away.

Last week, Arthur stopped in to have the oil changed in my car and had his ever present camera in hand. When the manager commented that he always sees him with a camera Arthur mentioned that we blog about real estate and local history.

The manager pointed to a tree and highway marker at the side of the lot and said, "There used to be a school right here". Sure enough, the very first high school in eastern Prince William County was on the site. The sign (hidden by hanging branches) provides a very good account of how the Prince William County school system made use of that site. I can't believe we have overlooked that sign for more than 20 years since we regularly use historic markers in our posts about Prince William County's history

Taking the time to read highway markers will

  • Let your out-of-town-clients know you are very knowledgeable about your community
  • Give you information to write interesting localism posts

We believe our knowledge of the area's history makes us better ambassadors for Prince William County.

If you go to Highway Marker Database you will see a link on the right sidebar to "Markers Near You" - it automatically finds the markers in your area and displays them on a Google Map. It doesn't get any easier than that.

Wonderful.  I wonder why the manager of the oil change store didn't cut a few branches years ago with pride.

Well, I have driven by that a few hundred times without seeing it or knowing it was there!  Amazing.  It should be more prominent!

I don't know why it is.  Perhaps it's because I blog now.  I seem to be noticing these historic signs everywhere, which I had missed before.  It is wonderful to receive the little history lessons they provide along the road of life's journeys.

Karen:  I find that the older I get... the more important loyalty becomes.  I mean, for me it has always been important... but gradually becomes even moreso.

Karen Anne - am not sure it is age related.  For example, when You, Arthur and I became licensed people relied on professional expertise.  The change is not peculiar to realty.  How about using an online template to incorporate, make a will or establish a trust.  Youcan even diagnose an illness online if you are that foolish.  This is no longer the world we anticipated.  Oops - the battery on my soapbox is getting weak  :)

Wow! That's cool. Thanks for another GREAT blogging idea. I know of a historical marker just east of town. I checked it out many years ago, but cannot remember what it was all about. I think it is time I revisit it!

One thing that is almost funny... is that many of us, myself very much included, have passed these Highway Markers so many times... and just keep on going.  Stopping and reading them not only gives us something to blog about and share with our readers... I have found it really helps me understand each area better.

It is a great way to really get to KNOW an area... by helping my to get a handle on the people who lived there long ago.

Karen,

That's fascinating! I'm glad that there are markers erected to memorialize these significant sites.
