In the echalon of famous Coachella Valley country clubs, Indian Wells Country Club ranks pretty high. Co-founded in 1955 by America's favorite TV couple—Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz—the prestigious club garnered acclaim throughout the decades and continues to burnish its bona fides as it approaches its 60th anniversary.
It was the desert valley's east end answer to the new Thunderbird and Tamarisk golf clubs in Rancho Mirage and presaged the arrival of both Bermuda Dunes CC and La Quinta CC further east just four years later. Because of its increasing popularity, Indian Wells became a major factor in "down valley" growth in the 1970s and 1980s.
Known from the get-go as the "Fun Club of the Desert," Indian Wells immediately attracted household names to its illustrious howeowners' roster. Frank Sinatra and Bob Hope resided and played there along with their wintertime neighbors on Desi Drive.
The golf club offers its members two distinct courses of 36 challenging holes, seven men's, women's and couples' golf groups, and a golf academy. The original Classic Course—with its tight fairways butting up to the sheer cliffs of the Santa Rosa Mountains—was an integral element for 50 years of the Bob Hope Classic. The picturesque Cove Course affords the player spectacular canyons and vistas.
A full roster of activities solicits member participation with numerous social clubs and events. The 70,000 square-foot clubhouse offers a fitness center, men's and ladies' locker rooms, two grilles, and four private dining areas for weddings and other functions.
A neighbor selected the venue just last year for her own wedding.
The club is family friendly and offers a variety of fun programs. Guest speakers, professional seminars and other events take place all year long.
New home construction continued well into the last decade, with million-dollar developments such as Tuscan-themed Villagio and a steady stream of custom homes. Condos include the appealing mid-century Sandpiper homes clustered around community pools. Homes continue to be built and remodeled, further galvanizing the historic enclave.
