An individual's right to vote is held very dearly by The Refreshed Home...who also decries anyone who wants to mess with that. ANYONE.

Are you registered to vote?

As we journey through the last weeks of summer, November seems oh-so-far-away. But anyone who treasures this right needs to be more concerned about the here and now.

Deadlines to register to vote are fast approaching. Do it now, or lose it. Here is the link to get you started in NY State.

Realtors and Movers: Want to reach out to your clients in a meaningful way? Anyone who has changed addresses in the last few years should hear from you on this.

Nothing political-unless you want to.  Think PSA. You have the data base, send them the link to your local Board of Elections with info on how they could register in a new area. Consider blogging about it as well, to reach your community at large.

College-bound? Citizens who will turn 18 by Election Day can register. Urge them to use their FB page to remind their  peers to register before they leave-and also to inquire/make arrangements NOW about absentee ballots. Post links, and ask others to like and share.

Friends, parents, neighbors: Know anyone whose status/address might have changed? How to quickly and easily register in your municipality is one google search away. Your one tweet, your one post can make a difference.

Similarly, status as an eligible voter is not to be taken lightly. Even if you are a regular voter, the rules in your state may have changed without you being aware of it. In the last two years, a whopping 16 states have made changes in their voting laws. That's right, it's not just about Florida and Pennsylvania.

At this writing, Florida, Georgia, Indiana, Kansas, New Hampshire, North Carolina Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Tennessee, Virginia and Wisconsin all have changes on the books; Alabama, Mississippi, South Carolina and Texas have new laws that are being challenged, or are in the proces of being implemented.

Legal challenges to these laws will certainly continue after the election. But if you want to make your voice heard in November, you need to be prepared in the way your state now requires. Is there any greater reason to make sure you are able to vote now, that your future interests will be protected??

If you have any reason to question your status, now is the time to check with your local Board of Elections. PLEASE. Here in Westchester County, a quick phone call to the Board of Elections (914.995.5700) can confirm your eligibility on the spot, here is their website to get info on voter registration, and absentee ballots.

Deadlines are fast-approaching: Do it now, or lose it.

Marie:  What a great idea.  I think those of us who have the ability to reach the public really should blog about Voter Registration.  In this upcoming election we need as large a turnout as possible.

I this those who try and hold down the number of people being eligible to vote are really doing something very unAmerican.

Marie, I think it can never be a good thing when a very small number of Americans end up determining the direction this country will take.  We should have a large percentage of citizens voting in our elections, but the number voting rarely gets above 50%.  This cannot be a good thing... regardless of which party is in power.

Whenever I hear someone complaining about the government, I usually end up asking them who they voted for.  You would not believe how many folks say... "um... I did't have time to vote on election day.  I had several appointments... and just couldn't get to it."

At that point... I tell them they have NO right to complain.

In voting, as in many things, if you're not part of the solution (as in "voting")... then you are very much part of the problem.

And Marie, it is always good to see you too.  Hope all is well with you and your family.

Marie, news about voter registration should be placed in front of voters as often as possible.  I also agree with Karen Anne about suppressing some voter registration and voting times in order to limit voters is definitely not a good thing, but as I heard in the news (at least if I got it right), voting hours were being restricted and or lengthened to benefit a specific party...I can't believe it's actually happening.

Nick:  I have read that, as well.  In certain predominantly blue districts, hours are shortened, and in predominantly red districts, they are lengthened.  Not very fair.

Nick and Marie, I have the perfect solution.  Since there will probably be a large turnout of voters for this election, all of the Democratic and Independent voters will be allowed to vote on Tuesday, November 6... and all of the Republican voters will be able to vote on Wednesday, November 7.  That way we'll have room for everyone.  Sound like a good plan to you ?

Nick-each state has different laws, but yes, you're right, some hours are lessened, others are imposing difficult circumstances to obtain proper ID. And for the mot part it's been done in a very stealth way...which is why it behooves us all to talk about it now. Realtors with the data base fuyll of people who have moved-and always happy for a real reason to reach out and touch past clients-have the perfect opportunity.

Karen Anne-oh you're a sly one!!

Marie:  Kudos to you for tackling this timely issue (or should I say problem??)  As you so eloquently point out, changes have been made recently within quite a few states.  Voters need to know where their state stands .. and what will be expected of them on voting day in November.  Better to be safe, than sorry .. or be denied the right to vote your choices.  Hopefully many take action after reading this valuable post ...
