Birthday banner

Birthdays are for celebrating - and today our family is having fun celebrating my granddaughter's number five!  Looking at her excited little self I've been thinking about birthdays and how our perception of them changes over time.

When I was a child, I was also full of anticipation and almost too excited to wait for the big day!  Birthdays were full of balloons, friends, cake and candles - and yes, presents.  I remember feeling like I was the princess that day.

Then came all those years when I was eager to reach some milestone birthday - how exciting to be 13 and finally be a teenager!  Or be 16 and able to get my driver's license!  Or 18 and be (at least in my own mind) pretty much grown up!  Or 21 and able to really and truly claim I was an official adult, legal to have a drink to celebrate even!

Hmmmm - but after that 21st birthday, it isn't quite as exciting to think of turning 30 or 35 or 40 or etc etc etc.  Though I have to admit that even at quite a number of years beyond 21, the idea of a birthday still makes me excited, and full of anticipation.

And sharing the birthday excitement of a 5 year old might be every bit as cool as when it's my cake and candles (oh no, we don't even TRY to put on the actual number of candles for my age!!).

So make a wish and blow out those candles, sweet Addy - I hope that all your dreams come true!

Hope Addy is having a wonderful birthday.  Yes as we get older the birthdays don't seem quite as exciting.  As a runner I am only happy when my birthday ends in a 5 or 0.  That means I move up to the next age group which is usually a good thing.  You have to look for those silver linings!!

Hi Paula - yes, we find those silver linings where we can!  Though for Addy I think everything is silver (or pink!)

Birthdays for kids are a blast :)!  They get so excited.  I think that the excitement dims a bit after you hit 40 lol :)!  They seem to come faster every year :)!!  Happy belated birthday to your grand daughter from me Nancy!  I hope she got all the cake and ice cream she wanted for her special day :)!

Thanks Brenda! I think she had a really great day - we ended up the day all having pizza at a favorite local spot and sang happy birthday to her with cupcakes from home to enjoy for dessert.
