I wrote a blog a few months ago about the Brea Lofts going Green

http://activerain.com/blogsview/264016/Brea-CA-New-Build

and to my suprise I found this in the Brea Newsletter today...

"City Wins CRA Award for South Brea Lofts

The City of Brea has been awarded the 2008 California Redevelopment Association (CRA) Award of Excellence under the category of Sustainable Developmentfor the South Brea Lofts project. The CRA annually selects award winners for over nine different categories; however, this year the Sustainable Development category was added. Therefore, in this award category's inaugural year, the City of Brea will take home the coveted statue and recognition at the CRA Awards Luncheon which will be held in Anaheim on March 26.

The project received the award due to its exceptional quality design, architecture, and mostly for its creative and unique use of green technology exemplified by including Neighborhood Electric Vehicles (NEVs) with each market rate and affordable rate home purchase. The development also incorporated an innovative storm water retention system and took advantage of some of the latest environmentally-friendly technologies from a structural and architectural perspective.

Overall, this marks the fourth award to be bestowed on this successful project. Previously, South Brea Lofts has received the Southern California Association of Governments (SCAG) Achievement Award for Visionary Planning for Sustainability through the Compass Blueprint Program (May 2007); the Orange County Chapter of the American Planning Association (OCAPA) Outstanding Award for a Planning Project (May 2007); and the Award of Merit for a Planning Project from the California Chapter of the American Planning Association (October 2007)."

See going Green is cool. I love my Segway, but I am thinking of buying a Brea Loft just to get one of those great NEVs.  Oh well, someday.

Cheers,

Aaron Mills

The lofts mentioned and awarded are across the road from a large empty dirt lot that has been sitting that way for nearly 4 years. Many of the storefront rental spaces connected to the lofts have not been rented. This a premature celebration. Additionally, many of the surrounding homes are in a lower income category. This award is ony for the purpose of making 'good press'.

Thank you for taking the time to comment on this blog Mr, Tammut,  I agree with you to some extent regarding this project, but any "good press" that Brea can get may help the other issues you bring up in your post.  Try your best to stay positive about our wonderful city and we can be a part of the success rather than the problem.
