Better be careful - shagging at the beach means SEX on the beach if you're from Great Britain!
Marian: What fun. Do the "on's" speak "off" as well? But this is not like a dialect, just descriptions, I gather.
And here I thought you needed to learn a little Spanish or Creole, Oh I forgot you are not quite South enough...
Hi Marian, Your post was a fun read. Hadn't heard some of those terms !
It was fun reading your post, Marian! Thanks for sharing your "southern: dialect - brings back memories of my visit to my Aunt & Uncle's in NC and SC.
Very enjoyable post. Just try living in Beaufort, SC with a real English accent and dealing with the Gulla dialect. Now that is when it gets really interesting. No one understand one another.
It's interesting to hear some specific language from an area. But,..... I've used cattywhumpus many times..... over here in Gulf Coast Texas.... right after I tumped over.
I think this is a very accurate post. There are lots of "sayings" all across the US and it is important to know what the "sayings" really mean.
Marian, Of course The Big Oak!! :)
How fun. The dialect of different areas across the US is fun to hear and usually easy to learn. But I must say being an 'off' person though really makes you stand out. :0)
I love the Crystal Coast and you've mentioned so many of our phrases and terms.... I love it. You forgot to mention that folks from "off" are the people who actually move here from somewhere else, and the "Dit Dots" are the folks that just come to visit ;-)
Well I didn't quite make it to the Crystal Coast, but I did get to North Carolina, as you know. Does that make me a "Dit Dot"? Such a cute post, I love it. Congratulations on the Feature.
LOL
Having lived in the South for many years, I still amused my beautiful wife with my colorful expressions. . .
Maybe I'll find time to respond to everybody but for now, thanks to all who commented. I wrote this post in the airport on my Ipad. I did forget many terms. Maybe I'll do a follow up.
Melissa, we drink Pepsi here. LOL. Pepsi was first made in New Bern, North Carolina and many of our local restaurants won't even carry Coke products. We're loyal. But if we call it anything else, it's soda.
Shrimp burgers? Yes please!!
Grew up on shrimp burgers....addicting and memorable thank you....As to words and meanings plus cultures and regions...Danny and the Juniors did a song called AT THE HOP...One of the lyrics is...."all the chicks, get their kicks at the hop hop hop...hop...try translating that into Japanese
Sounds like a dictionary is needed -- for sure for us ---- very interesting --- all the best.
Marian, I love this! In 2006 Nissan moved their corporate headquarters here from California. The English lessons were priceless for those poor people!
Marian,
The Carolina's are some of the most beautiful places on the East Coast.
