Could you please speak English!

It's been almost twenty years since I arrived at the Crystal Coast.  Some people have suggested that I have a Southern accent.  Perhaps.  At least I have learned to speak "Coastal".  Selling real estate to folks from "off" (that's  from anywhere other than Carteret County, North Carolina,) I often have to stop and translate for them.

So as you meet your new neighbors who are moving in from off, remember, there are often
different meanings for words.

If I say "it's a bit cattywhompas" that just means it's a little off center or perhaps a little strange.
"Shagging at the beach" is great exercise.  Your new neighbors may think your language is a little off color until you explain that shagging is a specific type of dancing to beach music.  And when directing them to the Shark Shack be sure to say that the causeway is the bridge across the sound.  They may need to know what the sound is.  No, not the crashing waves, the water between the mainland and the island.

They'll probably be surprised to learn that the name of the island that is home to Atlantic Beach, Pine Knoll Shores, Indian Beach, Salter Path and Emerald Isle is Bogue Banks.  It is more often referred to as Emerald Isle or Atlantic Beach.

A sittum is a deck overlooking the water.  A slick calm is the sound on a really still day when the water almost looks like a mirror.

They have arrived in the south and when they order iced tea, they'll need to know that will come sweetened unless they say UNSWEETENED.  If they see fresh dolphin on the local restaurant menu tell them it's not Flipper, it's  a delicious fish.  If they've never heard of shrimp burgers, they really may want to try one. (Their favorite REALTOR can tell them where the best ones are found.). I'd send them to The Big Oak drive in in Indian Beach.

If they think they are already down east explain they're not quite there until they get past Beaufort.  Be sure they know that they may live here for the rest of their lives but coming from. "off" they will never achieve the status of "local".  In fact there are few of those and when they meet a true local they should watch, listen and learn.  Locals have much to teach us and they will make the learning fun.

Marian: What fun. Do the "on's" speak "off" as well? But this is not like a dialect, just descriptions, I gather.

And here I thought you needed to learn a little Spanish or Creole, Oh I forgot you are not quite South enough...

It was fun reading your post, Marian!  Thanks for sharing your "southern: dialect - brings back memories of my visit to my Aunt & Uncle's in NC and SC.

Very enjoyable post.  Just try living in Beaufort, SC with a real English accent and dealing with the Gulla dialect.  Now that is when it gets really interesting.  No one understand one another.

I think this is a very accurate post.  There are lots of "sayings" all across the US and it is important to know what the "sayings" really mean.

How fun. The dialect of different areas across the US is fun to hear and usually easy to learn. But I must say being an 'off' person though really makes you stand out. :0)

Do you drink soda or Coca-cola? Do you eat hoagies or subs? Regional language is really interesting as it reveals so much about our country.

I love the Crystal Coast and you've mentioned so many of our phrases and terms.... I love it.  You forgot to mention that folks from "off" are the people who actually move here from somewhere else, and the "Dit Dots" are the folks that just come to visit ;-)

Well I didn't quite make it to the Crystal Coast, but I did get to North Carolina, as you know.  Does that make me a "Dit Dot"?  Such a cute post, I love it.  Congratulations on the Feature.

Maybe I'll find time to respond to everybody but for now, thanks to all who commented.  I wrote this post in the airport on my Ipad.  I did forget many terms.  Maybe I'll do a follow up.

Melissa, we drink Pepsi here.  LOL.  Pepsi was first made in New Bern, North Carolina and many of our local restaurants won't even carry Coke products.  We're loyal.  But if we call it anything else, it's soda.

Marian, I love this! In 2006 Nissan moved their corporate headquarters here from California. The English lessons were priceless for those poor people!
