Choosing to Be Happy

By
Home Stager with Owner, The Refreshed Home White Plains NY

In the 80s and 90s, there was little talk of how someone "felt" when they were buying things and doing stuff to their house.

Everything was about the visual. People spoke, and thought in singular, visionary words: stunning, gorgeous, elegant.

Then feelings entered the picture again....tentatively, at first. Words like warm, inviting and cozy were big, as were simple and peaceful.

Life changed for most of us in 2001, and our homes became our base. They were our refuge, our buffer. They kept gritty reality at a distance, while we yearned for the impossible, to be safe and sane in a scary and uncertain world.

The past decade has had so many of us in holding patterns. Busy doing and coping, keeping up and maintaining. But still waiting.

Even during those wild 80s and rebounding 90s, my client base rarely included people whose focus was procuring. People drawn to to work with me were people choosing to be happy. Planning to be happy, expecting to be happy. It's what this Westchester County Decorator has always loved best of this business. And it's b-a-a-a-a-c-k!

Happiness is a choice. But it's not as easy as it might sound. It's a choice to accept, let go, and move past who and what held you. It's daring to want better, and doing something to go after it. It's actually pretty brave.

Everyday in my business, I see more and more Westchester County homeowners choosing to be happy. I see their confidence in their paint charts, their dreams that look like a floor plan, and their hope that shines in the way of their finally cleaned out basements and pared-down closets. I love it!! Better, I am happy with them!!

Our spaces affect us profoundly...and so many other parts in our life fall into place when our spaces and possessions serve us in the best way they can. But getting there is much more than a pursuit of pleasing aesthetics.

Decorating and Staging are different, but much of the skill sets overlap, and each creates unique solutions that considers the needs, goals, resources, expectations, hopes and dreams of each client.

Bettering Westchester, Putnam and lower Fairfield counties since 1981, The Refreshed Home works collaboratively, and brings a thoughtful approach to the creative process. Proud to make a difference, as well as make a living. Marie - market analysis in a different way ~ how it affects you. Adding human emotions is a delightful touch. May you find all your "happys" in increasing numbers. Thanks for the insight.

Larry-what a lovely take, thank you!!

ROGER! Have been meeting some of the most amazing clients lately. Not amazing for the size of their bank balance or their house, but amazing because they are moving past difficult and challenging times and choosing to make a move, to better their space and be happy. It's a beautiful thing.

Marie, yes to everything you said except that I don't think it's so daring to want better, but I do think "doing something and going after it" is.  I always liked a quotation from Nietzsche, actually it was a miss quote, but I like it just the same..."having the courage of one's convictions."  The actual quote was something like "Rather it is a matter of having the courage of attacks on one's convictions."  Doesn't matter, they're tough words to live by.  Not sure how it applies here, but I think it does in some small way.

Happiness is a warm puppy -- according to Charles Schultz . . . and finding your happy is not hard to do, if we can keep it -- one word -- simple!  ;-)
