I haven't been to the Bluestone Dam in over 30 years, and had the chance to see it again while driving through Hinton to meet my family to celebrate my birthday.   It was a beautiful Sunday and we had the opportunity to stop and take some photos.  What a beautiful area.  We hope to go back and perhaps rent a cabin for the weekend.  There is so much to do and see in this area.

This post is the first in a series, "The Best of West Virginia"

Bluestone Dam spans the New River at Hinton, WV forming Bluestone Lake, the third largest lake in West Virginia.   Bluestone Lake covers 2,040 acres and is 10.7 miles long.

Bluestone Lake and Dam, Hinton WV

Bluestone Dam was constructed as part of the Kanawha River Basin flood control system primarily to reduce major flood damages along the New, Kanawha, Ohio, and Mississippi Rivers.

Bluestone Dam was completed for operational purposes in January 1949 and completely finished in January 1952. Total construction cost of this concrete gravity dam 165 ft. high and 2,048 ft. long was approximately $30,000,000 including land acquisition.  As of January 2009, Bluestone Dam has prevented over 2.1 billion dollars worth of flood damage from occurring.  Bluestone Dam has the largest drainage area, 4,565 square miles, of any dam in West Virginia.

With a 2,040 acre surface area, the Bluestone Lake provides boaters, water skiers, and fishermen with great recreational opportunities. Adjacent to the lake is Bluestone State Park.  The park provides cabin rentals, picnicking and camping facilities. Also, a swimming pool, gift shop, two boat ramps, and a marina are operated for the convenience of the visitors.

Hunting, fishing, camping, hiking, horseback riding and other recreational opportunities abound at the 17,632 acre Bluestone Wildlife Management Area adjacent to the park and nearby Camp Creek State Forest.

Those are mind blowing scenes, Rebecca!   I was just reading Richard's #6 comment.  It is fascinating to know West Virginia has no naturally occuring lakes or ponds.  Amazing!

I should also add, that in your last photo of the dam from that angle, it almost looks like a castle at first glance!

Great photos.  My Father-in-law lives in Hinton and I always enjoy the views around the Greenbrier River and the Dam.  I will be back in WV next weekend as "Pops" turns 80 years old.

I look forward to your other photos of the area.
