The London Olympic Games have concluded and the United States had an impressive showing netting 104 medals, 46 of them gold.
Even more impressive is the fact that 58 of the medals, including 29 gold, were won by American women.
As a matter of fact, if the American Women were a country, they would have been in fourth place overall in the medal standings.
When Title IX of the Education Act was enacted in 1972, many thought that it was patronizing to extend equal opportunity to women in athletics and sports.
But the opportunity for scholarships, recognition and the desire to be competitive has trickled down to secondary and primary schools, and participation in athletics by females is no longer a novelty, but is the norm.
As a result, American women now dominate international competitions of all kinds!
Proof once again that given the chance, the spirit of competition that dwells in all of us can blossom regardless of gender.
Congratulations to the American women and all of the medal winners.
Now on to Rio!
