As I stated previously in my post entitled "The Secret to Growing Your Business," you need to set goals in order to grow your business.  Have you set your goals for 2008?  If not, now is the time to go for it!

The beginning of the year is always a great time to evaluate where you've come from and what you really want to accomplish with your business.  This will also give you a great roadmap so that you can see where you're going in the coming year.

So, if you haven't already done so, make a list!  Find a quiet place where you can think and reflect on how you want your business to work for you instead of you working for your business.  Now is the time to think of all the things you would like to accomplish this year, the things you regret not having done last year, and the things you just wish you had time for. Then, prioritize that list.  Be sure to include both personal and business goals on your list so that you are not completely one-sided.  If your list has 8 business goals and only 1 or 2 personal goals, you'll quickly either burn out or get stressed and frustrated with working and loose that zeal  If your list has more personal goals than business goals, you will end the year wondering how you got there without accomplishing anything significant in your business.checklist

Examples of goals could be:

  • qualify for the Million Dollar Club for 2008
  • see at least 2 school plays that your daughter is in
  • take a family vacation of at least 4 days
  • actively participate in at least 2 professional organizations
  • contract with a Virtual Assistant to handle consistent lead management
  • sponsor a toy drive for Christmas
  • see at least 4 soccer games your son plays in

reach your goalEach of these goals can be obtained easily by breaking them down into bite-sized tasks that you can work on each day or month this year so that you accomplish them all.  We'll talk about that another day!  For now, set some goals for 2008 realizing that, if you do so, you will already be ahead of the game because the majority of professionals just wing it!

Set your goals and we'll talk later about reaching them!  Let's hear what some of YOUR goals are for 2008.  This is  great venue for encouraging each other so that we not only set the goals but actually reach them as well!

To your business success in 2008!

Renae, I especially liked that you had goals in many areas of your life, not just business. I like balance.

Renae - you might want to look into Mind Mapping - it's a freestyle way of attacking a goal, dividing it into specifics and then into steps. I find it's a good way to look at a project.

Sharon - I've done mind mapping for some of our clients.  Of course, it only works for those people who actually want to set goals and have a plan.  Those who just want to wing it won't benefit from Mind Mapping.  Thanks for the comment!
