A Georgia treasure lost. Sprewell Bluff State Park is no more.

By
Real Estate Broker/Owner with Richard Weisser Realty

A Georgia treasure lost. Sprewell Bluff State Park is no more.In the face of declining revenues, the Georgia Department of Natural Resources has decommissioned Sprewell Bluff State Park near Thomaston Georgia.

Although the property is still owned by the state there will no longer be any park facilities maintained by the state.

It is sad that the preservation of the natural legacy of Georgia is no longer a priority.

Although politicians claim to promote green solutions to environmental issues, they stand idly by as these treasures are lost one by one.

Perhaps Mother Nature should have placed these wonders closer to densely populated areas so there would have been more objections to closing the park.

But now it would all be all too little too late.

Sprewell Bluff State Park. Gone but not forgotten.

Note: Although no longer a state park the recreation area is now maintained by Upson County. There is a daily parking fee.

Good morning Richard,

How sad...I can't help but believe that if the budget was properly gone through they would have found enough in wasteful spending to have saved this public treasure.

This is very sad. How can a state just close a state park? A darn shame.

Richard, Parks are not what states need to be cutting. You are probably right that it wasn't near enough to the populace to get the attention it needed to survive the cuts.

Richard, this is a shame...citizens in the area need to rise up and start a fund to support the park ...you do not want it lost because of funding for the future generations.

Tightening the budget requires sacrifice by all. Fortunately this will remain a wildlife management area.

that is sad.  I hope someday there will be enough voices and donations to bring it back to park status.

Lenn...

Citizens will still have access to these public lands, but there will be no facility maintenance, and no ranger oversight.

Going to these remote places without law enforcement can be risky.

State Parks also prohibit hunting, making them safe for family excursions. GA State parks charge a daily use fee, or citizens may purchase an annual pass.

My preference is to be a Friend of GA State Parks and support the parks both financially and with volunteer service.

Richard,

This is really sad.  It looks like a beautiful place to spend some quiet time. Unfortunately, I don't think Sprewell Bluff State Park is alone!

WE fight every year to keep our parks open.  So far we have been fairly lucky.

Wow Richard, I totally hate that. Couple of years ago they threatened to close some of our state parks. Thankfully they found the money somewhere to not let that happen.

Sad (but familiar) sign of the times when we can't allocate funds to places like this, bridges, infrastructure & such but we always read & hear how a billion dollars here & a billion there was wasted by our government.

Article is not accurate. You can still go and visit Sprewell Bluff. Its maintained by the city of Thomaston now.

Good morning Richard,

Sad but true..many parks are being abandon because politicians are allocating funds for other issues. Glad to hear another city picked up the maintenance  maybe what will need to be done for other parks.

The parks don't vote...so they get cut. That is the unfortunate reality!

Richard, very sad indeed. It is good that the county took up the slack, but boy does that speak volumes.

I wonder when some of our parks here in CT will get the heave.
