Reasons For Low Well Water Pressure

Owning a home is an essential part to many peoples idea of the American dream.  Unfortunately, with the American dream comes many bills and headaches.  One of these headaches may be cause by your well system.  Low pressure is a common issue that many households face on a daily basis.  On average, a household should be producing 5 gpm (gallons per minute).  If the well is producing less than 5gpm, you may ultimately face some flow issues.     Some common reasons for this are

Insufficient Pump- This includes pump failure, Short cycling, Pump is to small for depth of well, Leaks, Clogs, etc….

Tank-Connection problems, Tank Sweat (occurs during humid months), Waterlogged tank, etc…

       Aerators plugged

        Sediment Filter Clogged or plugged

Air in Lines or Broken Pipes

Although these are the most common issues, other causes may arise.  One of the first things you want to do is to check the pressure gauge.  The pressure gauge is plumbed into the water lines between the pressure tank and the pump.  The pressure gauge checks the pounds per square inch in the tank.  The average household tank should read between 40 to 60 psi.  If this number is lower than you will know there is most likely a problem with your pump or tank.  This could also be caused by a broken pipe underground connecting the well system.  All of these problems can be solved and help you regain higher water pressure that you may have come accustom to.

Ashley:

Good information for people who get their water from wells.  I live in a city where there are some wells but they can only be used for watering lawns.
