Somebody's gonna pay for this

By
Mortgage and Lending with Mortgage Magic
Years ago I heard a very successful salesperson say, "If I have to get up in the morning somebody is going to pay for it." I was young but in a way I adopted that sales philosophy; not in an aggressive pushy way but in a motivational sort of way for myself.

The reasoning for me works this way. If I have to pay to do something I want somebody to pay me. I joined the San Jose Capital Club a few years ago and there was an up front fee and monthly membership fees. I told myself it would pay for itself.

Within a week I had a new client in the receptionist who was a long time homeowner. We ended up closing a loan for her (which paid for my membership) and she has become a friend and a long time customer.

Then I joined an athletic club which also has a monthly membership fee. My immediate goal was to get the fees paid for. I walked into the dressing room and saw another long time customer he and I talked and he asked me some mortgage questions. Another person over heard us and I ended up helping that person with a mortgage loan.

I could give many more examples but you get the point. If you join a group, a club, an association - anything - determine that someone will pay for it.

What I am not saying is begin to talk about your business and  be in peoples faces. I mean the exact opposite. My goal is that if I spend time or money at a gym then I want someone to pay for it but it "just happens."

That sounds crazy, "just happens". When I am at the gym or in a club meeting I make it a point to almost never talk about my business; never. But, at the same time when I join a club or a group I tell myself that my membership or cost will be paid by attending the meetings and becoming part of the groups. The above examples about the Capital Club and the athletic club happened on the first day of membership. Most results are not that rapid.

Why for me does this "just happen"? I think because I program myself and tell myself that it will happen. Then I go about my business and let it happen. The point is that in business you will need to join groups and be out and about. Since you are going to do that anyway then be of service to someone in the group or referred by the group and allow all your groups to pay for themselves.

Doug: I think that's a great post.  I like your description of "programming" yourself- It may also be that you are not allowing yourself to be "de-programmed" - That is, you go into situations knowing you'll be open to the possibility of obtaining business, even if you're not actively seeking it.  Just being open to it makes you more observant when opportunities present themselves, as your anecdotes demonstrate.  Thanks for sharing!  :)
