22nd Annual Austin Chronicle Hot Sauce Festival ~ Fiesta Gardens Austin TX

Austin Chronicle Hot Sauce Festival Sunday, August 26thIt’s time for Austin to heat up the summer – the Austin Chronicle Hot Sauce Festival is about to take place. This festival began in 1990 and has become the world’s largest, drawing as many as 15,000 spectators and more than 350 entries each year. This year’s event will be Sunday, August 26th at Fiesta Gardens. In the 22 years since it began, what started out as a small contest with just a few spectators has turned into one of Austin’s biggest and best-known annual parties, attracting visitors from all over the country.

Capital Area Food Bank Donation and Raffle: The festival is also a major fundraiser for the Capital Area Food Bank of Texas.  Last year the festival raised over $17,000 and almost 19,000 pounds of food in just a six hour period!  Admission is free with a donation of three healthy, non-perishable food items or a cash donation to the Food Bank.  Raffle tickets can be purchased at the festival, and that includes entry into a drawing for one of 5 packages valued at more than $500 each.  There’s no limit to how many tickets you can purchase: $1 each or six for $5.  Every $1 raffle ticket allows the food bank to provide $5 worth of nutritious food to Central Texas families.

The Hot Sauce Competition:  The competition has 3 levels: individuals (homemade), restaurants and commercial bottlers.  This way sauces can be judged and recognized in a class by themselves.  It also gives the judges a chance to consider hot sauces made fresh daily in restaurants apart from those made for grocery store shelves.  The 2012 judges are some of the finest chefs in Texas!

There will also be a wide array of food vendors on hand: Torchy’s Tacos, Brick Oven and Santa Rita Tex-Mex Cantina to name a few.

If you’d like to participate in the festival, you can download the registration form here and submit it by Wednesday, August 22nd.  Volunteer opportunities are available by contacting Gene Butler at hotsaucefest@gmail.com.

Dorie, what a hoot! I'm glad they've broken the competition into three divisions, that seems fair and the money raised goes to a good cause. Have fun in Austin.

Dorie: With that much fantastic hot food there better be a Tums booth close-by!  Sure hope this helps raise more funds than are expected.

Good morning Dorie -

Wow the 2nd Annual Austin Chronicle Hot Sauce Festival at Fiesta Gardens in Austin TX sounds like my kind of event!  I make sure our pantry is stocked with choices of tasty hot sauces.  Wish we were close enough to attend this for sure.  I had to smile at Anita's comment :)  About the truth....

What a wonderful sounding fun event!  One of my favorite chili recipes came out of a similar Texas event.  The winning title for it, "Kick-Ass Chili."  I need to dig it up and post it one of these days!

I like a good hot sauce...However, if too hot, it robs from the experience. If not hot enough, it becomes worthless liquid

I agree that a hot sauce festival does sound like a fun event, I'm not sure how long I would last trying the different sauces, but I would give it a good shot.

Thanks for commenting, everyone.  Yes, Liz and Bill, here in Austin (as I'm sure in other areas of TX), we take our hot sauces very seriously!!  Actually, Harry, what helps the most from what I understand is milk.  Water really doesn't do anything, crackers help a little. Whatever happens, a good time is guaranteed!

With the recent 20+ days over 100 degrees, I'm not sure Austin needs to heat up anymore... :)

Hi Dorrie.  I am a wimp and don't do hot sauce.  It does sound like fun.

Hello Dorrie,

I love hot sauce!  What a wonderful fundraiser for the Capital Area Food Bank, this should be a huge success!

I wish I could attend this also. I would like to find some events closer to where I live. I have a website www.the-best-hot-sauce.com with over 1000 hot sauce products.
