The American colonists began importing English thoroughbred horses early in the 18th century. They were bred to race on long, smooth racetracks and not able to adapt to the short, rough colonial tracks. The colonials cross bred them with Native American Indian horses which had been developed from Iberian and Arabian stock.

As you can see in the photo below they are stockier, have shorter legs and are not as many hands as thoroughbreds - they were able to run short distances faster and were ideal on cattle and sheep ranches as the country moved westward because of their ability to make quick, sharp turns and maneuvers.

Today, they are a popular rodeo horse and are seen at both Western or English horse shows

William  I don't understand - they are an American horse.  You don't need to go to Europe to buy one

Karen, they are magnificant animals and I find their power and speed intimidating on the few occasions I have ridden horses.  I am sure they had some fun at my expensive as they could detect my fear and unease when attempting to ride them.

Hi Karen,

I think horses are magnificent and their coats are so shiny. I love their personalities and the way they tap their feet and snort at times. I am not a great rider but I love to watch them run. Thanks for sharing.
