Texas Sales Tax Free Weekend 2012

Texas Sales Tax Free Weekend 2012.  It's that time of year again for the State of Texas to have it's "Sales Tax Holiday", Aug. 17 (Fri.), 18 (Sat.), and 19th (Sun.).

Are you new to Texas, and haven't heard about this weekend? It happens one weekend a year right before school starts and applies mostly to clothes and school supplies priced under $100. Local and state sales tax will not be collected on certain back-to-school items.

I happened to go out on one of these weekends a long time ago without knowing about about it and the stores were packed, and baskets were filled to the brim. If you're not into crowds and long lines, and don't really need to shop this weekend, you might want to change your plans : ) Traffic around the malls and shopping centers will also be more congested than normal.

There are some stipulations to this sale, it doesn't apply to everything, and I did see quite a few people that were frustrated once they got to the registers, only to find out that the items they had picked out weren't eligible.

If you go to the Sales Tax Holiday/Tax-Free Weekend link it will give you more details on what is included.

We have that here, too. I actually went out but found that either things were already picked over or they hadn't put out their best stuff yet to get rid of their older stock. Strange, I thought.

I think that this is the best thing for parents with school age children. However, this is the weekend I don't go to the mall or anywhere else in Texas to shop!

Cindy:  Great post... lots of money saved by parents buying things for their kids.

But... more important... CONGRATULATIONS on your hitting the 600,000 Active Rain Points plateau.  Way to go.  Lots of work involved, but you did it.

Hooray for you !

Peg, Oh, no, you're not gonna catch me out on that weekend.

Thanks so much Karen, I don't blog much anymore, so I had no idea I was even close to 600K, but yes, it was alot of work and took a long time.  Don't know how some of these people are over a million points...!

Hi Cindy ~ For anyone living in TX that is such a great idea for back-to-school necessities!  We don't have a sales tax here in Oregon -- but I've heard the state gets their $$ from us in other ways!

Hey Maureen, I didn't know that about Oregon.  We don't have income tax, or tax on food that is not prepared, but other than that yes, they will get you in other ways.
