Three weeks before closing, what now?

This is a great list of things the seller can remember to do while waiting to close.

I would add two things:

  • Contact utility companies to turn off utilities, perhaps a day or two after closing, just to be on the safe side in case closing is delayed.
  • Contact your homeowner's insurance company and alert them that the property is about to be sold. Of course, don't cancel it too early. You want to have coverage until the time the new buyer's insurance takes over.

Ok, your home is under contract and is supposed to close in 3 weeks! Is this when you panic? No, plenty of time left for that. Try doing these things during week 3 before closing and it may help you keep your sanity.

ð       When relevant, arrange for daycare on moving day.

ð       Check oft-forgotten areas (such as the garage, attic and basement) for things you may have forgotten to pack.

ð       Give away plants if you're not taking them with you.

ð       Arrange the transfer of any automatic deposits and/or withdrawals from your old account to your new account.

ð       Contact the Department of Motor Vehicles regarding your change of address if moving within state.

ð       If necessary, arrange for a storage unit to accommodate your things until your new home will be ready.

ð       If you are driving a long distance, create a playlist of songs to enjoy during the trip. Alternatively, purchase several books on tape to keep you focused during the drive.
