Last weekend with the weather well into the hundreds, our family decided to 'beat the heat' and get out of Sacramento. We decided to try a new place we had never been to before, Stinson Beach.
Located roughly 2 hours outside of Sacramento in Marin County (north of San Francisco), Stinson Beach is tucked away off of Highway 1. The last 12 miles is very windy and the drop down is sheer cliff. I actually got a little car sick during this last part.
Stinson Beach is near really great attractions such as Muir Woods National Monument, Muir Beach, and Mount Tamalpais. It has a long beach, where the cold water promotes fog throughout the year. In fact, when we were leaving for the day thick fog was rolling in and had almost reached the road we were driving on. A word of caution might be to leave the area before it is completely engulfed in fog.
Stinson Beach is a popular day trip for people in the San Francisco Bay Area and for tourists visiting northern California. Although most visitors arrive by private car, Stinson Beach is linked to Marin City by a daily bus service, and the network of hiking trails around Mount Tamalpais also reaches the town. The beach is one of the cleanest in the state, and sandy, unlike the rockier neighboring beach in Bolinas.
We ended up having a great time and were so happy that we had decided to get out of town. It felt even better when we returned and found out that the temperature in Sacramento had reached 107 degrees!
