Heirloom Tomato Festival at Carroll County Farmers' Market

On Saturday, August 18th, the Carroll County Farmers' Market, in Westminster, Maryland, will feature the Master Gardeners’ 4th Annual Heirloom Tomato Festival.  Hours are 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.

There will be around 40 different varieties of heirloom tomatoes to taste.  To be considered an heirloom tomato, the plants must be open pollinated, which means by the wind or insects, and has existed for at least 50 years.  The Master Gardeners will provide information on how to grow heirloom tomatoes and have heirloom seeds for customers to take home and grow next year.  In addition to the fresh tomato tasting, there will be a variety of dishes using the heirloom tomatoes available for sampling, as well as recipe cards.  Miss Tomato will be handing out coloring pages and crayons to children.  Students from Winter’s Mill High School will be providing face painting and will have their tomato-related artwork on display.

Dolores and I have attended these events in past years.  It is very interesting to sample all of the different kinds of tomatoes.  Follow the signs to the 'Ag Center'.
