Josh and I previewed commercial property in San Pedro this week for a client interested in work/live space. Since we were only a few blocks from the LA Port we decided to cruise by the area and snap a photo of USS Iowa in her new permanent berth in San Pedro.
As the LA Times reported on July 7, 2012, "The Battleship Iowa, originally commissioned in 1943 and among the biggest U.S. warships ever built, opens today as a floating warship museum in San Pedro's Berth 87. The ship is one of 48 that have been donated to coastal communities in need of tourism and upgraded waterfronts."
Judging from the number of cars in the parking lot on a Wednesday afternoon it appears the museum is attracting a steady stream of visitors. It was reported over 18,000 people toured the ship during the first 10 days. After all, it's a piece of history and how often do we civilians get the opportunity to tour a battleship?
The Iowa is likely to get much of the limelight Aug. 14-20 during Navy Days in San Pedro, when the USS Wayne E. Meyer (DDG-108) destroyer will be in port for tours. And don't forget the Queen Mary is anchored in Long Beach if you decide to spend part of your weekend near the water touring the grand dames of ships.
