Payson Rodeo

The event, which bills itself as the world's longest continuous rodeo, features bull riding, calf roping, saddle bronc riding, steer wrestling, tie-down roping, team roping, barrel racing and mutton busting. The rodeo, which is sanctioned by the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association, includes a Tough Enough to Wear Pink night on Friday, Aug. 17, to help fight breast cancer.

Mardi Gras Magic

The green, gold and purple beads and costumes of Mardi Gras take over the Salt River during this annual event. Employees line dance and give out beads and T-shirts. Drivers transform their buses into floats with Cajun music and riotous decorations. It's also the weekend before Arizona State University starts the fall semester, so this is traditionally a "welcome back" party for students.

Details: 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 18. Last bus pickup at 6:30 p.m. Salt River Tubing and Recreation, 7½ miles northeast of Loop 202 on Bush Highway. $15 for shuttle ride and tube rental, $12 for shuttle only. 480-984-3305, saltrivertubing.com.

Pick tree-ripened peaches and apples and enjoy an all-you-can eat pancake breakfast, peach ice cream or peach pie at this southern-Arizona farm setting.
