"Now that's a horse of a different color."

By
Industry Observer

In this election year, words of all kind are flying around and all of them negative. Mudslinging is what they call it and I believe that there are bricks mixed in with that mud this year. I would like to challenge all my Christian friends here in the rain to a fast of a different type. A word fast for 40 days.

In the movie- Wizard of Oz, they used a phrase that became common in our vernacular... horse of a different color... it refers to anything outside the norm. I believe we can agree that most of what we hear in everyday conversations is mostly negative, is it not? Wouldn't it be great to stick to just positve words? Words that encourage and cause good feelings instead of words that tear down and cause walls to go up?

The word- fast in Hebrew means to cover the mouth. Most implications are for not allowing food or drink to pass the mouth but another even tougher kind of fast is one of words. Not allowing words that are negative and destructive pass our tongues. It's bad enough to just think them but when we utter them, they become powerful and not the kind of power we want to display.  A fast of words is one of the fasts in Isaiah 58. Isaiah 58:9b lists not pointing fingers in judgment and no wicked words as conditions of great blessings listed in verses 10b-12.

So who's with me? At first it will be a struggle and if you ask God to help, you'll know you've failed as soon as the grumbling or complaining words come out. Soon you'll be more aware of exactly what you are saying and what it sounds like. When we use such language it's like fuel for our heart for the wrong kind of fire. When we keep them in it's more like putting out an oil derreck fire where they use dynamite to consume all the oxygen so the fire is choked out. We want to choke out all the weeds in our heart that will come out through our mouths. So the end result is eventually our heart changes to actually reflect what our mouth has done.

There is a story of Will Rogers stumping on a campaign trail with a friend running for Governor of Texas a long time ago. They used to ride the train rails and stop and speak at each town they came to. They called them whistlestop campaigns. At this one stop, a heckler in the audience made it a very hard speech to get through. Afterward he turned to Will Rogers and said, "So Mister Never-Met-A-Man-I-Didn't-Like, what did you like about that guy back there?" Will looked out the window of the train car and just said, "Mighty nice part of the country he comes from."

Try it, it's extremely difficult but soooo rewarding and a tremendous feast for our souls.

I'll go first... Mr. Romney seems like a great family man and might make for a good president. President Obama sure comes from a great country that still stands for freedom.

Bob and Bonnie -- I would have to say that it appears that both major candidates consistently follow their personal viewpoints, in how they approach problems.

OK...Governor Romney appears to be a very flexible politician and a good business man who sure knows how to utilize the tax code to his benefit.  President Obama inherited the worst economic situation since the Great Depression, and despite an unwilling Congress, has reversed job loses that were at 700K a month to gains of about 150K a month.

Steven, Well said. Good job.

Mike, Very well said. That would be a first for an ex president.

Karl, You have a wonderful way with your talking points. I would prefer we focus on finding what we do have in common and work from that. President Obama had a hand in creating this mess as Congressman Obama did he not? In for a penny, in for a pound. When we stop pointing the finger, sit down and earnestly look at our problems together instead of slinging mud, then and only then will they seriously be addressed. I'm looking for someone who is willing to do that. Someone who knows that NO is still a perfectly acceptable answer to people. There are winners and losers in life. I keep hearing some say that Jesus wouldn't go for this or Jesus never spoke against that... but I can tell you that if Jesus were elected president, he would definitely be a one termer if he made it that far. He didn't in Judea.

Nice backhand compliment Karl. Can't even make it without tossing out the insinuated insult?

Bob: Something I have been trying to do with my family and agents. By no means I am there, probably not even that close. But I did refrain from saying what I truly think of Mr. Hess' post.

I truly believe his intent was to start a fight on a post asking for people to watch what they say and even think. Not sure why he felt politics was the topic to use, since that is a very divisive issue, but again it says a lot about him and his intentions.

Than, I started it. Because I started with the most negative thoughts in my heart and it was the leadership in our country at the moment. I thought it was pithy but then again, I amuse myself more than most others. That's a pride issue with me I think. Keep at it Than.... it goes a long way, more than we know.

Than, Have you ever gone a week with tithing time to the Lord? I figure net that would be 1.6 hours or gross 2.4. If you can find one week in your schedule to do that you will be utterly amazed by the results. You'll find that the devotions you do now will pale by comparison. I would like to achieve it every day but fall far short most days. I try to find things that remind me to just think of Him though and those moments add up throughout a day's time. For instance, everytime your phone rings, just get in the habit of saying "Thank you Jesus." If your phone is like ours some days... you'll be praising him all day!

Bob and Than...I wrote it with a SMILE though....doesn't that count for something?

Bob - "President Obama had a hand in creating this mess as Congressman Obama did he not?"

As the kids say: "Epic Fail".

Than - comment #5 - Almost as back handed as praising a man's country rather than the man's character or attributes. I am just relieved that Bob acknowledges that Obama is from America.

Karl - I prefer the following:

Sorry Than for the confusion. Basically I was saying that Karl's statement is no worse or better than Bob's.

Ah, I see. But there was no insult to Obama. No attempt to call him a tax cheat or anything like that. He did not praise Obama, but he did insult him either.
