The end of summer means back to school shopping and the state of Maryland has joined 16 other states to offer a week of tax free school shopping.  For those of us here in Catonsville, MD that means no 6% sales tax on any clothing or footwear item under $100 from August 10-17th.  It's a great deal for families but a better deal for businesses who see a significant increase in sales during that week.

Shoppers also end up buying things that don't qualify for the discount such as household items or computer and other tech products.  Supposedly the average family spends about $600 on back to school shopping so the potential savings is just under $40.  It's not huge difference but I think it helps psychologically. 

It turns out that that the state ends up doing pretty well too.  The state comptroller estimates that Maryland loses about $10 million in missed tax revenue that week but may make up for much of it with the increase in overall sales.  Plus it's good PR for the state.  Now if they would just extend the savings to other school supplies we could really make that tax break work for us! Can you say new laptop?
