Today in my Inman News was this video,(attached below) of Brian Brady and Dustin Luther speaking at the Inman Connect Conference in N.Y.

It was on blogging, what else...

We hear a lot here on Activerain about how to blog, what to blog, finding your voice, blah, blah, blah...

But, this video is NOT on that, the video is primarily on the long tail of blogging. It starts out with a question and continues throughout the video on how to build YOUR community by blogging, BEFORE the "big boys" figure it out and jump in. Who are the 'big boys"?

The debate is really lively, it is 42.7 minutes long and well worth every minute spent watching or listening to it. I shrunk it down and listened while I did other things online. However, I still managed to take 4 pages of notes. That is something I never do, but the points were so good, I'd write down something and then something else and then something else.

Do Brian and Dustin agree on everything? No and that is what made is so much fun to listen to. All the questions are things I have asked myself as I am sure you have if you have been blogging for any length of time.

So enjoy, I sure did !

Missy - This should be very interesting.  I'm going to check this out as soon as I get home (no sound on my work computer).   Thanks!

Missy, of course, I was there live to hear Brian Brady and Dustin Luther talk about the long-tail of blogging.  They are exactly right -- the "big boys" will catch on in a matter of a few years, and we need to get a jump on all of them by continuing with our efforts.  The session was a very lively one and I'm just beginning to review all of my notes this week.

Missy -I was there too. Brian and Dustin had very different approach to blogging, but both are very interesting to listen to. BTW -the subject of the long tail came up at the very end of the session.

Hi Missy, Thank you for bringing this to our attention.  I will listen to the video later.  Thanks again.

Hi Missy,

Thanks for the info, I'll catch up on this one when I can. BTW, the first time I heard the term long-tail was from Dustin Luther last March in Long Beach. Everything about blogging was so foreign to me, not sure I totally understood his presentation. I'm anxious to hear both of opinions on the topic.

Thanks Missy!  This was a great video to watch and I learned a few things I didn't know....took a number of notes to incorporate into near future blog plans.

It's thoughtful of you to find these videos and share them with us....I really appreciate it.

Thanks Missy. I have not seen this video. I am certainly anxious to watch it and learn.

Thanks so much for the positive review!   I really had a lot of fun and have a tremendous amount of respect for Brian Brady.   He's a great guy and a ton of fun to be on stage with!

01/16/2008 07:10 PM by Dustin Luther (4Realz.net)

Dustin, you must have Google Alerts ! LOL  As you said on the video, if anyone links to me, you get lots of Google juice so have at it my friend !  :) It was a great presentation.

Weirdest thing happened to me today, I signed up for a new social network, site, fastpitchnetworking. I got a google alert almost immediately with my password as the headline. I've emailed and called and can't get a response from them. I was totally freaked out as I use that password on lots of my social network sites. Obviously, I changed the password but... it's probably too late.

Yikes...

01/16/2008 07:29 PM by Missy Caulk Ann Arbor Realtor Ann Arbor Real Estate (Keller Williams Ann Arbor)

That's horrible!!!   I can't believe the people running a social network site could be so dumb!

In terms of the alerts, I get a Google blogsearch feed (RSS) of my name and my website URLs fed directly into my feedreader, so your post showed up twice!  Google really has made it painfully easy to find out when people are talking about us!  ;)

01/16/2008 07:35 PM by Dustin Luther (4Realz.net)

Missy,  listened to this this morning while having my coffee.  Yes, it is very interesting.  Been with fastpitch for a while and all I'm seeing is a lot of spam, but you never know...

interesting comment above about fastpitch, which I know nothing about. will watch this when we get back from our sons basketball game. thanks for providing it.

Missy,

I thought the dialogue was pretty interesting...for my part, I'm not buying into that "it's all about me" crap!!! That 's not my style...in business or in society!!! JMHO, Thanks,   Fran

Hi Missy - I'm about to head to bed but I came looking for your post as I saw you mentioned this video in a comment on Katerina's post.  I'm bookmarking it so I can watch the video in the morning.  I'll have my pen and paper ready as I take notes, too, and if you took FOUR pages of notes, I'm guessing I'll be doing something similar.  I need to get a better grasp on long-tail keyword stuff.

Thanks for posting this and I'll be back in the morning!

Missy, Thank you so much for posting this, I have it bookmarked to come back to tomorrow or Friday because it got so late so fast.  But I am sure to learn a lot and hope I can incorporate some things into my blogs that I have not thought of or known to do.  Again, thank you for this post.

Missy, It was really great to be there and here these two, each of whom had valuable stuff to say!  I highly recommend that the Rainers who weren't there listen to as many of these sessions as they can.  I was there, and in between all of the craziness in my schedule, I'm re-listening to as much as I can.  Inman did a wonderful job.

01/16/2008 10:53 PM by Patricia Kennedy (Evers & Company)

Missy - Thanks for sharing I will have to listen to it this weekend.  This is time for us to really make use of this technology before the big guys jump in and they will.

Missy, like you, I listened to the whole thing on Inman while doing other things...I have three more of theirs to listen to as well.  This was a great discussion and I think reflects two totally different styles...just as in all real estate.  There is Brian, the no-nonsense everything is about the bottom line to Dustin who, from what I can tell, want a more personal experience.  They are both right and they both work.  That is what is so exciting about our industry.

01/17/2008 09:00 AM by Lake Norman Real Estate ~ Diane Aurit (RE/MAX at the Lake)

Missy - Both Brian and Dustin are great. I am not sure that I learned too much that has not already been discussed here at AR. I didn't really here anything revolutionary? I would be curious to know what you learned that you didn't already know?

01/17/2008 09:23 AM by Bill Gassett Metrowest Massachusetts Real Estate (RE/MAX Executive Realty)

Bill, the importance of having authority in my own community before the big boys jump in, I am assuming that means brokers etc.. The importance of in bound links, call to action in blog posts, being careful about pushing real estate too much and trying to "sell the consumer" something. Links being the currency of the web. Commenting on peoples blogs, not on AR, we know that, but OUT there. I read alot out there but don't comment as much. The goal of creating "raving fans" of my blog.

That blogging will and has evolved. That is use to be cool and now it is a tool. How can I use that tool to drive more business to my blog. It is a tool, like other things we do.

That it hard to get real estate posts on digg, delicious, mostly technology stuff. Static websites don't attract good inbound links.

That I should NEVER consider using a ghost writer. Ghost writers don't know the market like we do etc...

Don't say, "Call me when you are ready to buy?"

Enough, yes...

What did you learn?

01/17/2008 09:48 AM by Missy Caulk Ann Arbor Realtor Ann Arbor Real Estate (Keller Williams Ann Arbor)

Missy--You are always on top of things...I noticed that your comment to Bill was you learned never to use a ghost writer. I could never imaging you not writing your own blog... :)

01/17/2008 10:30 AM by Teri Eckholm, Realtor® Anoka County MN (Keller Williams Premier Realty)

That was one of the best "debates" panels at the conference.     Strive to get ahead of the curve.   Hope all is well with you and a belated Happy New Year!

01/17/2008 04:47 PM by Desiree Daniels New Jersey Real Estate (609) 448-2222 (RE/MAX Tri County)

I watched the video a couple days ago and found it very interesting. I have to say that Dustin's style (of blogging) suits me better since I'm not an "in your face" type of personality, so I don't think my blog should be something that I'm not. Brian's style might work for others however.

It was a great discussion and much food for thought.

Enjoyed seeing Jay!!!  "Down in front"!

Hi Missy:  This was excellent.  I know it is 1:30am, but I watched the entire video.  Extremely informative.  I took lots of note, too, so I was quite interested when you shared some of your thoughts in your comment five comments above this one.

I will re-watch this again tomorrow afternoon.  I picked up quite a few good ideas, and I am sure that watching it again I will catch even more.

What was the source of your getting this video ?  Is there a source of more of the Inman RE Connect videos from the New York sessions ?  Or even from last August in San Francisco ?  It was obviously just like being there.  Missy, thank you so much for sharing this.  Take care... stay warm...

01/19/2008 01:33 AM by Fort Worth Real Estate - - - Karen Anne Stone (RE/MAX Trinity)

Missy, thanks I also took notes. The length of the video goes so fast. So much to learn. I am still in pre-school when it comes to blogging. I knew I was missing things now I have a starting point. Thanks for sharing. Every one should watch this video.

01/19/2008 06:51 AM by Frank Rubi Louisiana Real Estate-Homes for Sale (Specialized Real Estate Services, Inc.)

Karen and Frank, we are all in the baby stage of blogging, that's why I enjoyed it so much.

Opps Karen, Inman News now has a lot of video's on their site to watch. You can also to YouTube and put in your topic and see what comes up. But Inman uses the WellcomeMat format.

Missy, have to show property but want to save my spot when I return and listen to this. Sounds like you got a great deal from it and it is worthwhile.

Had a couple of interruptions while trying desperately to listen to this video. I can see why you were busy taking notes.

I may need to listen a 3rd time...it was an excellent discussion and I appreciate you having it here for us.
