35 Comments on NAR wins the prestigious cow pie award of 2012 and beyond.
The advertising is offensive, offensive to agents, renters, and the general public. But quite frankly I find most TV ads so offensive that I dont watch TV....
Wasn't there also a rukus about NAR buying am expensive new building last week they'd admitted they had no use for?
Thank you for sharing this post I will watch the video and let you know my thoughts on this. I must agree NAR has lost touch with its members along time ago....
It has been a few years now that I have suspected NAR had lost touch with it's constituency, the folks who actually pay dues, in order to continue on in our profession. In addition to what you have stated, I also agree 100% with Bill's #1 comment.
Why are renters always dumb and second class citizens. Home owners are great and we all should buy homes if we can but it does not make us better citizens or rocket scientists Andrea. Kind of your standard syrupy NAR commercial. I like many here don't watch much TV.
Hi ANdrea - I guess the NAR has to realize they represent the Realtors, and must be representative of our thoughts and concerns- not theirs.
Thanks, Andrea - I missed that. Very lame offensive ad - I, like most here, Do not turn on the TV.... Almost every ad is horrible. That does not make it good for NAR to join them in horrible advertizing.
Join us at my MEET UP on August 28th at 4 pm at my place, please... We would love to see you this time!!! Bring a little healthy food and enjoy!!
Love reading your blog - fiesty!
Andrea - NAR is out of touch with the times and reality. The ad is more than offensive, it is ridiculous, unprofessional, and makes me cringe. Many people have lost their homes due to the economy, unemployment, job transfers where they had negative equity in their homes and could not sell, etc. This ad is in lah-lah land. It is embarrassing!
Doug, I have no problem to call a pig a pig, and yes, that is why I belong. I so wish there was something we could do that would change things, but alas...
Sussie, it is a load. There are many situations that make this a lie. I don't think they were thinking at all, to be honest.
Bryan, I was just so damn mad when I saw it. It was more than a waste of money, it was insulting to me, to so many people.
Richard, lets just take a large city like NY. I wonder just how many people are renting there... are they ALL foolish? What about the people who bought the last load of crap about home ownership, bought in with bad loans, lost their homes... are there kids going to flunk out of school because they rent now?
Mike, I would like to ignore them, but this is something I cannot ignore.
Eve, I have not had anyone ask me either. They don't even know the difference. I don't know how much the ad costs, but there is now an explanation on the Facebook post about how it was chosen. An even bigger load of cow pies there.
George, isn't it amazing? They say they have the data to back it up. But then again, remember when they published data about the housing market that they had to take back?
Tammy, If I could, I would. I am forced to belong if I want to do business. Lucky you that you can make that choice and still sell real estate.
Kristen, isn't it mind blowing? It goes from bad to worse, to... someone shoot the TV and make it stop! This commercial put Archie Bunker to shame!
Rene, I thought the same thing. And how many agents lost their homes?
Chris and Dick, thank you. We need to do something. I think we should all start at a local level, getting our boards to write to our state associations. I know I am not going to shut up about this.
Carla, me too, as most of us are in that boat. It almost makes it worse.
Scott, I am a Netflix kinda gal, watching it over my laptop. But, this is out there for others to see. And it sickens me.
Susan, I think I heard that. Amazing, yes, raise our dues and spend the money on such things.
Laura, this goes well beyond losing touch with us. It is demeaning, insulting, and it should violate some real estate law. I hope there is a law suit. Hell, I fell like suing them.
Myrl, it all comes down to money, doesn't it? And it sickens me.
Cindy, BINGO! Along with looking like some of the most bigoted people on the face of this earth.
Gary, it is more than syrupy, it is disgusting.
Gay, but it doesn't even make any sense? They must have been drinking the day they ok'd this commercial.
Dagny, thank you! I am trying to work out my schedule! It is horrible, isn't it?
Andrea, how stupid do they think buyers are? Geeze! And buyers are happier than renters? Really? And their children are prettier and smarter and more popular and more likely to be cheerleaders and homecoming queens? Really???
Andrea, way to insult people who are not able to or who have chosen not to buy a home! NAR needs to do some focus groups before they spend our money on productions such as this. People with just plain common sense would have told them this would be very offensive to many people.
Sharon
Pat, apparently so, who knew? Isn't it a load?
Sharon, I don't really think that this should have required a focus group to tell them it was a bad idea. And by the way, they claim to have had a focus group. I can't help but wonder who this focus group was comprised of. I have only seen ONE comment, between all the places I have read, who said that it was acceptable.
I saw that ad too and couldn't believe it. Improves school grades? I want what he was smoking when he did that commercial.
Jackie, I think this qualifies for one of my favorite sayings... "they might want to consider paying more for their drugs". Just sayin....
As a "Government Affairs Liason", Mr. Davison needs to spend less time convincing homeowners to buy, and more time helping homeowners that are stuck, with nowhere to go, because their home is underwater. He needs to meet with the lawmakers and discuss ways to get us out of this mess we're in. Great post Andrea.
I watched the clip that you inserted. I watched it three times. I did not hear “rent” or “renters” mentioned. I think you and others have interpreted the commercial in your own way to give fodder to your dislike for the trade organization that advocates on our (your) behalf.
I did hear “Home ownership matters.” I agree with that statement. Do you not?
NAR is not perfect and cannot make all members happy.
John - We can all agree I think, regardless of our opinion about the ad, that the people who created it are not stupid. They would be stupid if they called out what they are saying is bad, which is renters. In case you missed it in andrea's original post, here is the direct quote of what the ad DOES say:
“Owning a home also provides many social benefits. Homeowners are healthier and happier. They are more involved in their communities, volunteer more and vote more often. Their children stay in school longer, get better grades and get better jobs after school.”
So who is it these children stay in school longer than, get better grades than, etc? The only answer is the children of people who are NOT home owners. And who might that be, other than renters? This 'wink-wink' approach to discrimination is the same as the redlining that used to be so common (& still happens in many areas by the way). It's why we (as real estate agents) should not use certain code words when describing neighborhoods. It demeans and dehumanizes people, who just happen to be our neighbors, food preparers, child care workers, teachers' aides, butchers, farmers, etc etc etc. The creators and defenders of the ad can pretend the ad does not insult renters all you want, but we all know darn well that they are only pretending, because they are not stupid enough to actually believe it. They only hope the people watching are.
@Rich #33
The NAR is a trade organization that advocates for Realtors and for homeownership. If you wish to twist that advocacy into a slam on anyone who is not a homeowner that is your privilege but you are mistaken.
Bob, thank you! Personally, I would think we want those people to know that we are working hard to get them out of a bad situation. But sadly, we are not.
John, I am wondering, as my partner says below, who is on the other side of the coin? Which children are they referring to, if children of home owners do better, have a better chance at life, which children do not? You have home owners, and you have non home owners. Please, tell me who they are referring to? They didn't have to say the word "renters" because we all know, including those who don't own homes, who they are referring to. Home ownership is a choice in life, and many, unfortunately, do not have that choice available to them. I prefer that the trade organization NOT slam anyone who can't. And I would say, it would seem that most others agree with that. But, in life, we all have our own opinions.
But John, please tell me, whose children are on the other side of the coin?
Rich, thank you, I couldn't have said it better! The ad is painful to me, because as you stated, it dehumanizes and demeans anyone who is not a home owner. The idea that the only way to give your child an advantage in life is to own a home is ignorant and highly prejudicial. And we as Realtors cannot participate in anything that has a hint of that.
