How does your vehicle look these days – the one you use for business?  Is it clean?  Organized?  An attractive representation of your home staging company or real estate agency?  A lot of home stagers have weighed the decision of using some sort of signage on our vehicles, be it vinyl lettering or magnetic signs.  Some may have vanity plates that creatively tell the world that you’re a stager.  Here is what we have done to our cars.

For the inside of the car, we found these nifty little organizers that are perfect for keeping a stash of Room Revisions business cards, postcards, flyers and promotional pens handy for any situation we’re in.  The organizers come in different styles and sizes.  Many options can be found at Target or Walmart.  I wanted something small that would be dedicated exclusively to holding my promotional materials and  not be cluttered up with extra “stuff” like CDs, maps, etc.  We ordered ours from http://www.organizeit.com/autostor.php.  They attach over the headrest and can be positioned on the front of the seat, or swing around to rest on the backside of the seat when you have a passenger.

Magnetic Car SignOur company opted for magnetic car signs and we ordered ours through www.buildasign.com.  We are located in North Stafford, Virginia - a small town.  Route 610 (or Garrisonville Road) is North Stafford's only major thoroughfare through the commercial district of town.  Virtually any place of business that you want to go in North Stafford is located off of Garrisonville Road, and I’m up and down that stretch of asphalt every day.  My primary objective with a magnetic car sign is to get my company’s name out in the community, day in and day out.  Personally, I wanted a sign that stood out and was highly visible, but didn’t clash garishly with the color of my vehicle.  I like the versatility of being able to remove the signs should I decide, for whatever reason, not to be rolling advertisement for my company on any given day.  Hasn’t happened yet, but I like the option!

Card HolderSpeaking of rolling advertisement, just last week I saw an innovative idea for business cards on the go.  I was pulling out of a parking space while someone was pulling into the space next to me.  She had vinyl lettering on her SUV for her legal services business.  Can’t remember even what type of legal services she was offering, but what REALLY caught my eye was the business card box attached to her window with a sign that said “business cards, take one.”  I came home and searched the Internet and found the boxes available at www.vehiclecardpockets.com.  They are also available at www.cardpockets.com.  The point of having signage on your vehicle is to promote your business.  Why not provide easy access to your contact information at the same time?  People are more likely to take a business card that’s right at their fingertips than to search for a scrap of paper and a working pen in their console.  I know many times I have made a mental note to remember a website or a company name that I see on a vehicle, only to forget it by the time I get home.  Purchasing these plastic card boxes are on my to-do list.

If you haven’t taken the time to “stage” your car, these tips and links make it easy.  And if you happen to see Room Revisions on the road in the Stafford and Fredericksburg area, honk and wave - and take a business card!!

My insurance agent told me that when you put those magnetic signs on your car, and if you are in an accident, your insurance company can decline a claim because you are using your car for commerical purposes...unless of course you have it insured for commercial use (which is really expensive here in Florida).

Andrea, good ideas, thank you.

Wendy, if you are a realtor you should have your car insured for bsuiness/commercial use. Don't forget it is tax deductible

Andrea ~ I like that organizer you got for inside your car.  A good idea for keeping extra brochures and business cards readily available.

Definitely liking the business card idea...just load up about 15 of those things and fly around at 75mph and viola!, easy distribution too!

Andrea, the business card box is a good idea.  If prospects ride in the vehicle with you, there's another consideration - the vehicle should smell good, too - (or at least not smell bad - cigarette smoke, etc.)

Wendy - I hadn't heard of that.  I'll have to check into it here.

Nick and Trudy - Thanks for commenting.  :)

Mike - I certainly noticed the other lady's car.  It was the FIRST thing that jumped out at me.  I think it's also a good way to be approachable in a non-intimidating way.  You're actually inviting people to approach and take your information.

Kathy -  I searched around for awhile until I found one that had pockets just the right size for business cards and postcards.  I don't want to have to dig around in a portfolio, my purse or the glovebox.

James - Way too funny!!

Wayne and Brian - My car smells good, too.  Actually, too good.  I had to move the air freshener to the back of the bus because the apple/cinnamon scent was too strong.

about the insurance, I have the higher limits but I don't carry commercial insurance because I don't carry clients in my car.  my agent mentioned it because I said I was going to put the magnetic signs on my car regarding my services as a Foreclosure Consultant.

Wow!  I cant wait to show my partenr the business card pockets!

You know I have thought about somehow putting a stack of business cards somewhere on my car...and you have found the solution! Thank you! But I guess now I have to make sure my car is spotless, if someone comes up to take one they'll no doubt take a peek onto my car!

Also funny it was mentioned about the magnetis signs and accindents...well someone just side swiped my parked car this afternoon...and my sign saved my door! though I guess this means I'll need another sign...

Wendy - I'm getting conflicting advice on this subject.  My own State Farm agent says she doesn't think I need anything beyond my personal auto policy.  Another agent here in town that I network with says I do need commercial coverage.  My State Farm agent is checking into it.  I'll update for everyone's benefit.

Marci - I thought the business card pockets were pretty cool.  Can't hurt to have your business information accessible!

Stephanie - Sorry to hear about your accident!  I ordered 3 magnetic signs, thinking that I'd put the third one on my cargo door.  Unfortunately, I didn't realize until AFTER the signs arrived that my cargo door isn't even metal and the sign won't stick.  I guess it's fiberglass.  So now I have an extra sign in case one gets lost or damaged.

Fernando - Those rules can be a PITA, huh?  I found out just recently that there are restrictions about commercial vehicles driving on federal land.  The vacant we just recently staged is in a community where you have to drive two miles through protected land - a Civil War battlefield - after passing through the security gate at the entrance of the community.  Because of that, commercial vehicles (any vehicle with commercial signage) have to use a separate entrance a mile and 1/2 down the road that bypasses the protected land.

haha my car is so dusty, this is why i never put signs on it :) i actually used to have magnetic signs, but they got blown away on the freeway due to heavy winds & rain. i am a little bit concerned about putting them up again because of that.

cheers,

cindy

ps. great resources!

Cindy - Sorry to hear you lost your signs.  I looked at several different sites online before I ordered mine.  They should tell you how heavy the vinyl is or what gauge it is.  The heavier, the better.  Also, I read that rounded corners rather than pointed corners help with the issue of wind catching a corner and ripping it off at high speeds.  Although you can't really tell from the picture above, the corners on my signs are rounded.  I've had my signs on for several months and they've never budged.  I travel on the interstate frequently.  In fact, I had to work at getting them "unstuck" so I could go through the car wash recently.  I'm happy to say that there wasn't the slightest evidence of where the signs had been positioned after the car was washed.  And the signs themselves still look brand new - no staining, fading, etc.

Can't help you with the dusty car issue, though!  I'm hoping that I'll be motivated to get my car washed more frequently since I've got the signs on now!

Love the idea of business cards on your van.  I have a large box van for our staging days and have put our website and our logo on it. It's my second truck and I did not put the phone number on it on purpose this time around. I found weird people calling me on the freeway etc. and it wasn't much fun.  BUT if I am at a job I wouldn't mind having this card box on the truck or when its parked in a parking lot. thanks so much.

Kym - that freeway phone call thing .... creepy!!

Anita - I am satisfied with the magnets so far.  It's an inexpensive way to jump right in and start advertising your business everywhere you go.  Also, I think it promotes a more professional image and shows the public that you're serious about your business.

Terrylynn - There is just no way to keep your car clean all the time unless you can keep it in the garage - which I don't.  So for me, it's regular trips to the car wash.

Great ideas for advertising. Main thing if you are going to put your advertising on your car that you follow the rules of driving. Don't be on your cell phone when driving. This makes people mad. Always remember you are advertising as you go. We have agent that have signs covering the whole car. Does anyone have real estate agents that do that?

I just cleaned out my car last week.  It was to the point I was embarrased for anyone to ride with me.    I love the organizational pouch.  I'm going to check out the link! Maybe it will help keep my car presentable!  Thanks!

Just checked the site.  Was yours the compact swing around organizer?  $10.99?  Yours looks perfect.

Debby - I'm a pretty defensive driver.  I admit I drive above the speed limit on the interstate (most of us do), but I'm a polite and cautious driver most of the time.  My husband, on the other hand, is another story.  I guess years and years of commuting up and down I-95 have left him impatient, aggressive, and downright scary sometimes.  I've told him he can drive any way he wants to in his own car, but he'd better mind his manners when he's driving MY car because it reflects on my business!!!  LOL

Kim - yes, I ordered the compact swing-away organizer for 10.99.  I thought it was just right for what I needed.

I remember before I was a REALTOR, my husband and I went to look a homes with our first agent and her car was dirty, messy and didn't smell so good.  I have never forgotten this.  She was such a neat, clean, professionally dressed person and her car was a MESS, which absolutely ruined the good impression we had of her.

Melissa - Trendsetting can be fun!

Kimberly - That is true.  I've struggled with whether to take out my granddaughter's car seat and whether a child's seat looks professional, but I've decided it only comes out if I absolutely need the extra room by folding down the seat.

Barb - It's funny you mention remembering a ride with a Realtor.  I remember our Realtor pulled into a gas station with us in the car and pumped gas with the car still running!!  It was very cold outside and she didn't want to turn off the heat.  I had never before seen anyone do that and haven't seen it since.  I was a little nervous!
