Does Anyone Take Black & White Photos Anymore?

Real Estate Broker/Owner with Don Sabinske, Sabinske & Associates Inc. 539MN

It was an odd thing…I happened to be messing with my camera, trying to get the photos from the camera to download onto the sandisk.  And, I  made an error.

No, it doesn’t happen often that I make a mistake, but if one had to be made, this was a great time to do it rather than while I was “working”.

I was trying to take photos of some fish we had caught, and the end result was that the camera was taking black and white shots which I found interesting, but not great.

Sadly, I deleted them while trying to get the camera back to normal and the photos from the camera back to the disk.

But, I thought they were interesting and wondered if any of you take any black and white photos with your cameras?

I will be here waiting to hear, with a line in the water.

Better to choose one you want in b&w and edit it with a photo program.

I guess I never thought of changing it over, Alexandra and Kevin.  But, thanks for the ideas.  Now, back to the fishing for a while longer at least.

Don, we just shoot in color then remove the color if and when needed.  At times we keep a color and B&W shot of the same photo.  I really like the look of black and white in fact we have some professional pics in B&W.

Hi Don -- I like black and white photos for some situations.  As John commented shoot in color and then remove the color -- depending on the shot keep both versions.

Fishing? What's that? I haven't wet a line in some time. I might have to try that this weekend. I do like B&W pictures for some shots. Mostly scenery stuff. I would want my fishing pictures to have all the color in the world.

Hi Don,

I love the look of a black and white photo.  I often take photos and print them in both black and white and in color and then decide which I like better.

I will ocassionally change my color photos into black and white via photoshop, but I don't think there are too many people that will do the originals in Black and white anymore.

I take mostly pictures of friends in b&w.  It's a throwback to a cousin who took remarkable photos in black and white.

I always take photos in color but, often times will then change them to black and white. I think for some it adds character. Wish I had a line in the water too!

Actually, the professional photographer took over 800 photos at my daughter's wedding last June and many were black and white as well as the same shot in color. Many of them seem to have a special effect simply because they are black and white. There is something to be said for those photos!!!

I love black and white and sepia to create moods - but most of the time use color. But, agree with the consensus here, shoot in color you can always change them to b/w and sepia later.

My husband did almost exclusively black and white photos until we just moved in a new home and sold all of his dark room equipment (yes, he did it old school style with film and everything).  I was sad to see the dark room go, but he wasn't having time to do any of it anymore between real estate, family, etc.  We have tons of his black and whites in our house.  THey are beautiful! -Kasey

I bet you are going to be taking more black and whites! :)  I don't take pictures. . . except on my cell phone, so I don't have an option.  We hire professional photographers for our homes and they are always in color.

I take black and white photos from time to time. My camera allows me to highlight certain color while taking b/w pictures. It's cute to see b/w picture of someone holding a bright red umbrella--and only the umbrella was in color.

"I will be here waiting to hear, with a line in the water.", hope its not getting too cold out there waiting for our comments, a few of us just found this through Suzanne's reblog.

I have not taken bw photos in many decades, but after your suggestion, I think that it might be fun to start experimenting with the settings on my camera.
