Defense of the self requires self-defense training.  Really?  Sounds simple but, do you have the skills?  If you were holding an open house and needed to defend yourself could you?  If you were preoccupied with your ipad how would you react?  I started thinking a lot about self defense after hearing about the incident in CO at the Batman movie.  As Realtors we tend to be more comfortable at our open houses in our community.  When I’m going to a movie I’m there to relax and watch a movie.  I wouldn’t be expecting a masked person to fire shots in the theater.  Unfortunately, it can happen anywhere at any time.  So why not be prepared.  Here is a bit more about the Womens’ Self Defense workshop coming to Seattle, 9/28-9/30/12.

Women's self defense workshopDefense of the Self
Why?  Because being the best person you can be requires learning to take care of yourself.

Why?  Because too much stress limits a person’s ability to perform at the their highest level.

Why?  Because the ultimate Defense of the Self is one based on a life of balance.  The best a person can be is when he/she savors every day of their life.

Why?  Because fear for most of us is invisible.  Stress and depression are reactions to invisible and unacknowledged threats, often that we take for granted.

Why?  Exercising a person’s personal rights, especially for women, often rubs society the wrong way.  And that may generate hostility and aggression from some members of society.

How to use Defense of the Self in business, and relationships.  How to avoid common mistakes that can make a woman feel as if she has no right to support herself, or to have support from her community.

In other words, prepare to be intimidated, or prepare to support your rights, even from invisible threats of rejection.

You never know and should always be prepared.  I've been working out my guns during my fitter and firmer class but this looks like something I need to check out.  Thanks for the heads up Kristine!

Self defense techniques are useful tools, but they should never be thought of as the end all, be all, to self defense. The use of these tools must be ingrained into your very core.  They must become instictual and without thought.  In addition, you must believe in yourself and your right to be safe, respected, and valued, wholeheartedly. Others have power over us only when we grant it.
