National Waffle Day- August 24-How Are a  Waffle and Nike Related?

National Waffle Day is August 24 and I say celebrate in style!   Well it is almost the weekend and what’s more decadent than having waffles for a weekend wafflesbreakfast!

Actually, this day marks the anniversary of the first U.S. Patent for a waffle iron (1869) by Cornelius Swarthout.   There were  waffle makers as early as the 14th century.  These were hinged iron plates, which were made to imprint coats of arms or religious symbols.   Not to be outdone, modern man’s waffle makers can  give you waffles in the shape of Mickey Mouse!

General Electric is credited with the first electric waffle maker in 1911.

We actually owe quite a bit to the waffle maker.  In 1971 an Oregon track coach, Bill Bowerman, used his wife’s waffle iron to experiment with rubber to make a lighter weight sole for footwear.  With further experimentation,  he and his partner came up with the “Waffle Trainer” and formed a company known as Blue Ribbon Sports/Nike.  His partner... Phil Knight.

So that’s how the waffle and Nike are related!

waffles Today’s waffles come in different shapes, with oh so many different toppings.... whipped cream, ice cream, strawberries, blueberries, powdered sugar.. anything you want.

And I keep seeing waffles and fried chicken offered.  I’m just a plain old purist... waffles, a little butter and real maple syrup.

What about you?  How do you like your waffles?

Morning Kathy-It seems as if they have a day set aside for everything. I love waffles. I am waffle purist too. Maple syrup and butter. Now Mom like a slab of vanilla ice cream with hers. It probably would be good but I never tried it that way.  On a side note I smile every morning when I look at my blog roll because you and Roger are generally always next to each other for your morning posts. It is rather uncanny but maybe you two plan it that way. Smiling.

Good morning Kathy -

I guess we celebrated a day early without knowing it.  Debbie fixed delicious pecan waffles for dinner last night.  Ahhh yessss and they did hit the spot!  She even melted the butter and warmed the syrup before serving.  I felt like a king :)

Have a great Thursday!

John

BARFF- our friend gave us a waffle maker several years ago and Larry makes wonderful Belgium waffles.

Roy-  I just can't bring myself to eat the waffles with fried chicken... yet.

BarbaraT- me too, and it has to be the real maple syrup.

Sally & David- oh gosh... I'm so hungry now.  I would cut the waffles in the little squares...one at a time.

Gary- oh...that's not that plain!  Have you ever had pancakes with chocolate chips dropped in them.  Total carb/sugar rush but so good!  Oh yes, when I go out for ice cream, I get chocolate.  Very plain.

Gabe- I posted this early so people could plan!!!

Doris- neither would I.  Who knew!

Captain Wayne- try Emeril Lagasse's recipe from the Food Network!

Dan- I was a pancake person, and still am, but I like a good waffle (and not the kind you get in the freezer section.)

Brian- there you go... chocolate.  I'm with you.  You can't go wrong with chocolate.

Joanna- it would be fun to try to make waffles on one of the older makers.

Dorie- isn't it funny how food can take you back to a favorite memory.  I'd bet there are kids who've never had a real (ie. not frozen) waffle.

Sharon- your mom is a heartier eater than I... I just don't think I could do the ice cream.  And I'm going to have to check with Roger about that!!!

John (QMan)-  now let's not go overboard....I may heat the syrup but the butter too???

Hi Kathy - Yeah, I just don't get the waffle and fried chicken thing at all, but I have a huge weakness for pecan waffles. Thanks for the post - I'm already planning breakfast tomorrow.

Cool, love them.  Being raised Catholic, for years we did not eat meat on Friday.  Sometimes Mickey would make waffles for dinner on a Friday................that was such a treat for all of us.

Kathy,

Here in the hotel where I'm staying for a few more days, I used the waffle iron for breakfast! The waffles turned out perfect! They tasted delicious and there was very little effort or work on my part.

Quality products, like quality services are tough to beat!

Joan- there just seems to be something decadent about eating waffles.  I love it.

Dick- I don't get the chicken thing either but they advertise the heck out of them at IHOP.  I have some pecans that I may toast for tomorrow!

BARFF- Breakfast is my favorite meal  but I've never had waffles for dinner.  I may just try it.

Patricia-  tried to call you... give me a buzz when you return.

Jeffrey- definitely going to have some tomorrow!

I've never been a fan of eating dessert for breakfast so waffles with tons of fruit and whip cream is not something I go for.  I prefer mine with syrup and butter.....I just may need to have some this weekend with some crispy bacon!

Sharon- Now you're talking.  I'm like you... not too big on the whipped cream, etc for breakfast.

I can never manage to make it to one of your posts before 25 comments, Drat.  Anyway, real maple syrup and real butter...maybe some ham or bacon on the side, and I am in HEAVEN.  And, you can hold the Rubber Souls...Beatles, get it?
