National Waffle Day- August 24-How Are a Waffle and Nike Related?
National Waffle Day is August 24 and I say celebrate in style! Well it is almost the weekend and what’s more decadent than having waffles for a weekend breakfast!
Actually, this day marks the anniversary of the first U.S. Patent for a waffle iron (1869) by Cornelius Swarthout. There were waffle makers as early as the 14th century. These were hinged iron plates, which were made to imprint coats of arms or religious symbols. Not to be outdone, modern man’s waffle makers can give you waffles in the shape of Mickey Mouse!
General Electric is credited with the first electric waffle maker in 1911.
We actually owe quite a bit to the waffle maker. In 1971 an Oregon track coach, Bill Bowerman, used his wife’s waffle iron to experiment with rubber to make a lighter weight sole for footwear. With further experimentation, he and his partner came up with the “Waffle Trainer” and formed a company known as Blue Ribbon Sports/Nike. His partner... Phil Knight.
So that’s how the waffle and Nike are related!
Today’s waffles come in different shapes, with oh so many different toppings.... whipped cream, ice cream, strawberries, blueberries, powdered sugar.. anything you want.
And I keep seeing waffles and fried chicken offered. I’m just a plain old purist... waffles, a little butter and real maple syrup.
What about you? How do you like your waffles?
