ActiveRain "Angel" Pamela St. Peter to the Rescue!
I joined ActiveRain several years ago, and have been amazed at how much business I have generated through my blog posts on South Charlotte, NC (both real estate and lifestyle related). But what is even more amazing to me is the "virtual friends" I have made here in the RAIN!
I want to send a BIG SHOUT OUT to our very own ActiveRain Ambassador, Pamela St. Peter, of Prudential York Simpson Underwood Realty, serving the real estate needs of Raleigh and Wake County, NC. I have never met Pamela face-to-face, but she came to my rescue when my daughter, a recent UNC Chapel Hill grad, needed help with a rental home in Raleigh.
My daughter, being the independent-minded young lady that she is, wanted to find a rental home close to downtown Raleigh for a group of 4 young women. Her first attempt at finding a home landed her at the doorstep of a Craigs List scam! She found a home that was too-good-to-be true...because it wasn't true, it was FOR SALE, and some schmuck stole the listing photos and was trying to get some fool to send in a deposit.
That's when I decided to contact Pamela St. Peter! I have always admired the blog posts and comments that she and her husband Lee write, so I felt very comfortable seeking her advice. I know Pamela doesn't focus on the rental business - most of us don't! But she responded to my email within minutes, and was on the ball telling me about some of the areas that my daughter had picked. She even told me that her own son was trying to rent his awesome townhome, and that maybe this property would be a good fit. But before I could talk to my daughter about it, she had already signed a lease somewhere else. Grrrrrrr.....but I digress....
Pamela kindly sent me more information on the property my daughter chose and the listing agent for the rental, so that I could judge for myself what my daughter was looking at. She encouraged me to consult with the Raleigh police. I wish I had done that! The home and the area seemed OK..and my daughter was excited. Fast forward a couple of weeks...
My daughter contacted the landlord and asked him to resurface this bathtub below. It is completely DISGUSTING, with embedded grime, germs, peeling paint, and God knows what else. I don't know why she didn't address this BEFORE she signed the lease. Maybe she didn't look behind the shower curtain. Anyway the landlord said it would cost too much money to resurface, so the girls just should get a mat and take showers instead of baths. Uh huh.
Next, the girls discovered bats in the house and a leaky toilet. The landlord sent someone over to remove the bat, but he couldn't find it. He sent a plumber over...when the girls were at work. He sent a maid over to clean the bathroom...when the girls were at work. Do you know where this is going?
ALL of my daughter's good jewelry was stolen. Not the silver, not the artificial pieces, the good stuff...the gold. Things passed down from my mother to me to my daughter. The thiefs didn't take the TV, the iPad, the computer or anything else. Just the meltable gold. My daughter called the landlord, and he said they should have had renter's insurance. YES, they should have, but he shouldn't have given out the keys to service people without the tenants present or being given advanced notice.
I emailed Pamela St. Peter again, and asked if her son's townhouse was still available. She graciously gave me his contact information. Unfortunately, the townhouse wasn't big enough for 4 girls. But still...Pamela tried so hard to help us, just like she was a member of the family. She wanted to know the outcome of our search and whether my daughter was settled. My husband and I drove to Raleigh last weekend and moved my daughter OUT of that dreadful house and into an apartment with security. We'll deal with the legal issues later.
Well, Pamela St. Peter IS a member of the family - the ActiveRain family! She treated me like I was her sister or best friend, jumping in our tale of woe to offer help and advice.
This is what ActiveRain is all about! Sure, we get lots of business and tons of new knowledge from sharing our stories, but the friendships made are priceless. I hope to pay it forward when a Rainer needs my help in Charlotte!
Thank you, thank you, thank you Pamela St. Peter - you were my ActiveRain angel to the rescue!
PS - I hope you won't mind that I stole your AR picture to stick in this post! I wanted everyone to see your smiling face!!!
