Historic Ellicott city

A tragedy rocked historic Ellicott City early last Sunday.  A train derailed Monday August 20th just after midnight a few yards past the bridge that leads into downtown.  The real tragedy is that two 19 year old students were sitting on the bridge just a few feet away from the tracks.  Seconds after the train sped past them, the derailed cars covered them in coal and they were killed.

Our entire area is in shock and mourning - the main road into Ellicott City was shut down for days as the huge clean up and repair work takes place. The Howard County police department are still on hand to supervise residents and onlookers who are walking down to see the aftermath.

Watching the trains lumber across that bridge was a site many of us were delighted to see in the past. (4 years of the "Train Phase" for my son) Now I know that everytime I drive under that bridge with the huge Ellicott City sign I will think of Elizabeth and Rose sitting there enjoying their last days of summer before returning to college.  None of us can guess their last thoughts or why they stayed up there as the train came towards them.  A series of tweets they sent from the bridge just minutes before the accident were cheerful and carefree.

The NTSB is wrapping up its' investigation of the site and workers are almost finished removing cars, repairing the tracks and trying to clean up the tons of coals that poured into the river below.  The roads in this old town will also need to be repaved from the damage all those huge cranes and dump trucks caused.   Life will be back to normal soon but probably not exactly the way it was before.

Ellie, I am so sorry to hear of your town's tragedy.  Such a loss and I'm sure you will be thinking of the two ladies each time you drive through.  Again, I'm so sorry.

Ellie:  What a heart-breaking story you have shared with us.  I think of the families of Elizabeth and Rose... and cannot even begin to imagine how they must feel.

In your post you mentioned the "tweets" that the two young women sent as they sat... track side... before the derailment.  I just hope that they were not distracted so much by their tweeting that they couldn't escape from the horror that became theirs and all of Ellicott City's.

How truly tragic.

Ellie, this certainly was a shocking event and not something any of us could have predicted.  My heart and prayers go out to the families of these girls whose lives have been cut way too short.
