Black Canyon of the Gunnison a well kept secret

So you didn't make it to the Grand Canyon this year, how about something closer to home but still impressive? Take the Black Canyon of the Gunnison. The canyon located between Gunnison and Montrose and is in total 48 miles long and about 9 miles wide. Of those 48 miles 14 miles are protected as a National Park. I thought it was interesting that this only happened in 1999. Before that it was 'only' a National Forrest.

There is a 7 mile scenic route with several outlooks at the top. Its not as crowded as the Grand Canyon, smaller, but still breath taking.

Stay overnight! Choose the campground at the top or you can drive down into the canyon and stay there. You won't have electricity but you have water, all for $18/night.  If you want to make the Black Canyon a day trip, consider camping at the Blue Mesa Reservior. Go, take a look at the Curecanti National Recreation Area.

I need to mention that this is an anglers paradise. Hikers can hike along the rim on a few easy or moderate trails but you can also hike into the Canyon, but that's a bit more difficult as routes are not marked to well.
Mountain bikers are not getting too much out of this park, but if you'd like to just take a break, this is the best place.. The sheer beauty and size of the Canyon will make up for it. Don't forget for all wilderness activities you'll need a permit.

Verdict: if you are looking for an exciting adventure on bike, off road bike, or hiking - this might not be for you. However: If you are looking for cool and cheap place to spend the night before heading to Ouray or even Telluride then this is definitely worth it.

Thanks, Susanna for sharing these pics on the Black Canyon.  It has been over 30 yrs since I last visited that area of Colorado.  Such a pretty area outside of Gunnison!

Hi Susanna - I rode my bike through there several years ago - amazing and incredibly scenic, it truly is beautiful territory, and not much tourist traffic.
