New real estate agents who have had good advice know that they need a website - and they know that the website needs an agent bio. They also know that since they're just starting in the business they can't talk about experience and expertise.

So they worry that there's nothing to say that will help them build their business.

 

They need not worry.

 

Everyone has done something before turning to real estate as a career. Some have had rich and varied experiences in a number of jobs while others have spent years in a real-estate related occupation, been involved in volunteer work, or simply gained a wide range of skills while wearing the many hats of a Mom or Dad.

 

The trick in writing a new agent bio is to focus on the agent's experience and his or her personal values and philosophy - without mentioning their "newness." Usually I can also add information about why they appeciate their community - to show that they do have area knowledge. And of course I layer on a small bit of personal information such as hobbies, pets, and volunteer work just to give readers another reason place to connect with a shared interest.Hidden identity

 

People tend to like other people who are "like them" in some way - even if the connection is as simple as a shared interest in golf, needlepoint, or hiking in the mountains. That small connection can be the turning point that causes an "I choose you" response.

 

Something I've found interesting is that after reading and re-reading an agent's answers to my agent questionnaire and my own notes, I'll see a set of skills and values that are common to all they've done. This is true even when past experiences seem at first glance to be diverse.

 

 It might be listening skills, attention to contract details, teaching, communicating, patience, persistence, mathematics, architectural knowledge, artistic design, or any number of skills and personal attributes. This common thread becomes the "anchor" for their bio.

Being a brand new REALTOR(R) doesn't mean being a brand new person. So yes, even a brand new agent can have a persuasive agent bio.

Marte, I always struggled to write anything about myself so I've always had my husband who assists with my marketing do my bio.

Marte, I used to tell my new agents this. First they had lots of training they could brag about and everyone came from some place else that gave them a skillset.

Debbie - Right. If they want to admit to being "new" one of the advantages of working with them is that they're up-to-date on changes in real estate law, etc.

I like that you bring attention that ''likes attracts likes''. 

And I agree that we should write our online bios and social media profiles with consumer's interests in mind, craft accurate, error free. You do not have a second chance to make a first impression.

Thanks Inna Ivchenko - It isn't easy to write an "about me" profile and have it really be about the reader, but I think it's important.
