Interviewing Is More Than Finding A Safe Haven...

Most of us are thinking about the year end and preparing for 2013.  A very important step prior to preparing goals and new targets for 2013 is to determine who you’ll be associated with during 2013.  Unless we know about other options, we will never know if we are making a good decision about staying where we are.

Interviewing is a healthy task, and I think it should be exercised every few years.  Interviewing is not a task that indicates that someone is unhappy.  I consider interviewing as a method of searching for the next plateau.  It’s a way of locating the best option for exercising the next phase of your journey.

Interviewing will allow you to determine what is missing from your current program, and it doesn’t always result in a move.  That information can be implemented at your current office.  Interviewing will result in ideas surfacing that could be of value to you and to your coworkers.

Interviewing may give you a new appreciation for the direction you presently have available to you.  Interviewing can work in many ways.  Interviewing is not necessarily a task of finding a “safe haven.”  I consider interviewing a necessary undertaking to continue on the right path with production.  Interviewing should be the first step prior to setting goals for the next year.  It’s another good business practice.

Wow, worrying about 2013 when I still have to deal with 2012. Look ahead but don't trip on the now.

Anita....most of us fall short on this topic..... I interviewed when I was a manager...it gave me a better appreciation for what I have....

Scott.... buying into a franchise is a good investment if you select the right franchise.... a real estate office is as good as the agents who work there.....

Pamela.... you're right....it's important to have the best of the best working on your team..... if we have room for improvement, we need to take the emotion out of the equation and make the change...

I have notice in 2012 that many agents and quite a few firms left the "Big Named" franchises.

Rob.... many agents jump ship because they blame their own poor business practices on the office.... it's not the office, it's usually them....if an agent is a top producing agent, that agent should be able to work from a "mom and pop" office or a big named franchise or from their vehicle..... some agents continue to move every two years ..... I'd never hire that type of agent....

Good point Barbara and I'd add that one of the best times to make the move is at the end of the year when business is quiet. Hope all is well.

Good Morning Barbara, I started doing what I need to do for 2013 in June. Have to keep leads and follow up now for next year while keeping track of what i need to do for the remainder of 2012. Agents that feel their business is going nowhere, blame it on their broker, the market, instead of themselves. I love where I am and am not going anywhere.

Hi Rene.....most are interviewing right now..... to decide what they'll be doing at the end of the year....

Jackie....I'm sure your broker/owner will negotiate some benefits for you to stay..... by the way, have you set the date for your annual review????? it's always a good idea to meet with your broker/owner and get a feel for his thoughts on your stepping up your game....he may want to participate in that task!!!!  I know I would....

Corinne.... that's great.... I hope you do take the opportunity to meet with those broker/owner/managers who dangle the carrots to see what they have to offer that you could implement right where you are....

Well, I am done hopping around for the time being lol :)!  I have found my Broker home thus far and it's working for me.  I think the combo comes from feeling comfortable where you are at, like you are a part of something.  If you're not satisfied where you are at, then interviewing is very important.

This and the negotiating your commission post are freakishly timely for me right now. I kinda feel like you've been a fly on the wall in my home for the past few months. After much thought and prayer, I've decided it's time to start interviewing and learning what else is out there. You're right that it may not result in a move, but it's helpful to know what other options are available to us.

Barbara,

Love the post and especially love your response in #8 to Rob's comment - that's a whole blog in itself.  I am constantly getting calls for recruitment and I do not hesitate to meet with them to see what they are about.  So far nothing has enticed me to move.....Sometimes it looks like the grass is greener, but the water bill is usually higher.
