“Multi-Tasking Did More Harm Than Good for Me”

Many years ago, one of my clients asked me why I kept looking at my watch. I was not even aware I was doing it, well maybe I was. He then said, "if where you need to be is more important, than where you are, maybe that is where you need to be." How embarrassing. I took off my watch that day and have never worn one since.

I decided to take a good hard look at how many things I thought I could do at the same time and came to the conclusion, I was making a horrible mistake. That if I was doing this with my clients, who else was I doing it with?

I went to work asking my wife, kids, family, friends and employees. I didn’t really like what I was hearing. Wow, what a rude awakening.

I contacted the client that initially pointed out and thanked him for have the courage to say something and how much of an impact his words are going to make in my life. That was nearly 40 years ago and we have been friends ever since.

Learn from my mistake, so you don’t have to make as many of your own.

Healthy Body, Healthy Business: Prime Your Mind for Improved Productivity

By: Zoe Eisenberg

Description: http://rismedia.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/08/productivity1.jpg

Just like it would be difficult to drive your car down a road littered with safety cones and large debris, working with a cluttered mind is not conducive to bettering your business. When you’re not able to focus, mistakes are made, phone calls go unreturned, and paperwork begins to back up. But how can you make sure your mind is in its peak performance? Don’t worry, I’m not going to tell you to meditate! Read the following ohm-free tips to get your brain in its best shape ever. Your business will thank you for it!

1. Stop multitasking. While multitasking may seem like it’s a business boon, it can actually stretch your attention thin. Results from a study conducted by researchers at Stanford showed heavy multi-taskers have trouble keeping tasks separate and cusing focusing on their current project. Their brains were stuck on whatever they were working on before. By going in a handful of different directions at once, you’re not giving 100 percent to any project at any time. Free up your mental real estate by making a to-do list and ranking it by priority. Now go ahead and thrill yourself as you check off your tasks one-by-one.

2. Stand up. Studies show that sitting all day is bad for your health, even if you’re active outside the office. To give your brain an oxygen boost (and refresh your creativity) be sure to stand up at least once an hour. Stretch, briefly chat up a coworker, or take a quick loop around the office to get the blood flowing. Having trouble remembering to take standing breaks? Set an alarm.

3. Sleep. A good night’s sleep is crucial to proper brain function, and studies suggest that getting less than six hours of sleep per night can raise your cortisol levels, making you more stressed out. Additionally, sleep deprivation will put a damper on your mental performance, and make even the easiest of tasks—like a 15-minute progress meeting or lunch with a client—seem difficult.

4. Play – While scientists are still determining whether mental games ( hello, weekly crosswords!) can boost your brain function, it has been shown that letting loose and shaking off stress will allow you to better focus when you return to business as usual. So make the most of your time off; power-down your smartphone and enjoy a playdate with family or friends. When you do return to the office, you will focus better than if you spent your weekend worrying about work.

5. Sweat – While you may know exercise will keep you fit, did you know it can also keep your brain healthy? Studies have shown that those who exercise regularly remember more, think clearer and often perform better on cognitive tests than those who are sedentary. Whether it’s the increased blood flow or the rise in stress-busting serotonin, breaking a sweat regularly will be good for your body, your brain, and your business.

Good points, Joe!  Thanks for sharing.

I have a customer that gets annoyed when I don't answer the phone all the time.  He doesn't like voice mail.  When with him one day, he noticed my phone indicating an incoming call and asked when I ignored it.  I explained that I was with him and giving him my undivided attention.  The light bulb went off for him and he realized that when he gets voicemail, it's because I am involved in a live converstation.  While I used to explain that to him, it didn't have meaning until he saw that call come in.

I like your other points too!  They are spot on.

Have a great day,

Dee

This is great stuff.  We have a Realtor in our community that is (or acts like) she is busy, busy, busy, busy, as that annoying woman on Angie's list commercial likes to say. This Realtor is always "leaving".  You get the feeling you must rush through what ever you've got to say because she is "so important" she has other places to go and people to see that are much more important than you.  Makes me want to avoid her at all costs.  And so guess what?  I do.

Thanks, Joe, for sharing your story.  Your advice should be carefully considered by all of us.  Sitting at the computer as I write the comments is not good for my health and I need to modify my behavior.

It is good to be as busy as a bee but we also need to take time to enjoy the beauty that surrounds us.

Joe, I have learned through the years to concentrate on what I am doing at the moment, but sorry Joe the watch stays on my wrist :} :} :}

Joe, I don't think I could survive without my watch. I guess it is just habit.

I took my watch off three years ago and haven't missed it. I check my phone every once in awhile, my computer and car fill in the gaps.

Hi Joe - what a great story. You got me thinking about the ways that I communicate my hurry to be somewhere else. We're not human DOings, are we? It's certainly time we all learned to just BE.

I'm glad the real Debbie Reynolds shared this fabulous post! I missed it. The fact you had the courage to ask your family, kids, and friends about what happened and called the client back to say thank you! I'm truly impressed. Whenever I have an appointment I turn off my phone going in and leave it off until we're done and part. I know how I like to be treated and I assume anyone I'm in audience with just might feel the same. Thanks for this great reminder!

Great memories this blog. We've all had that person looking around rather than at you during those networking luncheons. And, oh, about watches (which I haven't worn since the iPhone came out), I remember this young businessman who kept looking at his Rolex--had nothing to do with time. I always wanted to ask if he'd bought it from a guy on the street on Fifth Avenue (I was in New York at the time).

Good morning Joe,

Great post, multi-tasking takes control to not watch your watch...I only wear one when touring homes with my clients to be sure we stay within our showing timeframes.
