Most important for all to stay safe in the next few days and listen for the emergency broadcasts and take their warnings.
Hi, Peter: Thank you for stopping by, and for your comment. Good points, too. I'd say that just about all of us can think back to Katrina news stories and remember thinking "Why didn't they evacuate?" or something similar. Need to make sure there are no Isaac stories like that.
Dennis - last time I checked seems it is not affecting us on the East Coast other than, probablly, rain and rough seas. Do you remember that it is 20th anniversary of Huricane Andrew?
Good that Isaac is ot promising to be anywhere that powerful and destructive
Hi, Jon: Thank yuo for dropping by, and for your comment. It's good that Isaac has pretty much left us unscathed around here- now, we just have to wait and see how the rest of the country fares.
Just moving down here 5 years ago, I don't remember Andrew the way many around here do. I remember it- but more along the lines of current events-turned-history than any actual impact I felt from it.
I remember the storms of 1992 overall very vivdly, though- from a bit of a different perspective. For example, today is the 20th anniversary of the day Hurricane Iniki mad landfall in Hawaii. It remains the worst storm to have hit there, and is in the top 5-7 in U.S. history.
Guam also got smacked in '92- from a total of 6 typhoons. Typhoon Omar hit the island on this same day in '92- and did more damage to the island than any storm in 15 years or more. I had a ton of Navy friends/shipmates impacted by the storm. I made a trip back over there in November of that year- and we got hit with 3 typhoons in a month!
The worst of them, Supertyphoon Gay, hit just before Thanksgiving and had a lot of folks looking for recipes for stuff to go with grilled turkey. If you think a turkey takes a long time in the oven, try throwing that thing on a grill!
No fun- but when you haven't had power for a week or so, you're thankful just the same.
