Where’s the Other Little Piggy? Timber Greens in New Port Richey FL

By

Where’s the Other Little Piggy? Timber Greens in New Port Richey FL, I thought I lived on a golf course but these guys showed up the other day (I’m thinking they left the third little piggy home to guard the place from the blowers). These are wild hogs that live in the woods behind the golf course. I hear them in my garden sometimes in the middle of the night; they can really tear up the garden and the golf course when they have a hoedown out there.

Wild Hogs in Timber Greens

Supposedly, Wild Hogs were brought to Florida by Hernando de Soto (I think he probably gets blamed for lots of things. Or maybe Ponce de Leon, it's hard to tell now-the pigs aren’t talking.) In the next 4 centuries, everyone brought pigs with them. Mostly they were raised in a half-wild condition, only being called in when needed for chops; until laws were changed. A lot of them were left wild and became the feral population we know now.

They were deliberately released into the wild by private individuals and the Fish and Game Commission to improve hunting opportunities for many years. Florida no longer does that.

Wid boar can be pretty agressive!  But they are delicious.  I remember hearing the hunters in the S. of France in August shooting them in the woods at the start of hunting season.

What an unusual sight on a golf course. They look pretty big, Toni. I guess with all the rain you'll be getting in the next few days, the pigs will be able to find lots of mud to roll around in.

The piggies were dropped by explorers in the Islands too, because they were so prolific and the food sources were so unpredictible in those days.

Ron - we sure do, especially right now. Although Isaac is being a lot easier on us than anticipated.

Dave - glad to be helpful!

Jennifer - thank goodness, I will never find out. Thesee guys are kind of cute but I know to stay away from them.

JoAnn - they are a good size; we could fill the freezer with them ;)

Jeanne - definitely! Thanks.

The golf course grounds people must hate these animals that can cause so much damage.  Thanks for sharing the pictures.

Have an outstanding week and enjoy the last days of summer.

Hi Toni.  Good things we don't have wild pigs because  I'm not sentimental about animals that tear up my landscaping.   Is there anything you can do to get rid of them?  Will animal control relocate them?

Toni, seeing wild hogs would be a new site!    We have a family of foxes in our neighborhood, and one is really skinny!

Toni,  Wild hogs can do a LOT of damage and can be dangerous.  I do not know how close you were to them when filiming ... I would not get close without being protected inside a building or something else that would not allow them to attack.

Kristin - I hope it's not too crazy; we've had enough of that this weekend.

Dianne - Animal Control won't have anything to do with them and catching them would be fun to watch ;)

Joan - we have foxes too. I love to see the babies.

Alexandra - that would be great-I'll have to get out my trusty truffle hunting magnifying glass. But not when the hogs are there.

Kathleen - I'm glad you're back. Yes, they can but I was in my house shooting through my window which is why the video isn't super clear. We have window film on.

Hi Toni,

They look so peaceful and cute but.....have you seen the show on TV where the guy in Texas (I think) goes around and chases them off people's properties with his family? The wild hogs are mean and do a lot of destruction.

I like the video and I'm also glad you were not too close.
