My nine-year old son has been training for several years in Tukong Moosul, and I wanted to promote this business as a terrific place for kids to learn and exercise.  Specific skills that I have seen improve for my son include balance, strength, and endurance.  Additionally, there is a mental toughness instilled that impresses me.  In addition to this, the teachers that he has had are all "good with kids", especially Master Ali Brown.  Master Ali is young and personable, and the kids always respond well to him.  In fact, we switched to the headquarters school a couple of years ago in order to follow Master Ali.

Grandmaster Wonik Yi (pictured at right) actually developed Tukong Moosul for the South Korean Special Forces in the late 70's, and he runs the school where my son trains today.  He has some incredibly stout credentials, having been raised in Dae-Yeon temple from age five, where he learned traditional martial arts.  Master Yi also helped to choreograph the fight scenes for the movie "Sin City" and he established The Fighting Stunts Association and The Action Film Institute a couple of years ago.  He also holds a Doctorate degree in education.

My son has a "junior black belt" now, and it is great to see the self-esteem that they work to develop with the children.  At this point, he and the other black belts are allowed to help run certain parts of the class.  It is great to see a different side of my son emerge as he encourages other kids in their training.

If you have any questions about our experiences, please feel free to call me directly at 512-796-7653 (cell).  The fees are very reasonable and the results are awesome.  For a fun, affordable, and educational experience, you cannot go wrong with these guys.

They recently opened a new 11,000 square foot headquarters school, which is located at 10435 Burnet Road in north Austin.  You can visit their website at http://www.masteryi.com/.  They also run several other area schools.

Jason.... I think this is great for young kids... learning discipline, focusing, and accomplishment. I was going to do this in 8 th grade with a friend, but his family moved that summer. I never did it and I regret it. My niece and nephew did it for a year and a half, but lost interest.

Martial Arts training for kids is a great character builder on many fronts.  Self-esteem and self-discipline are instilled in the students, if you are in the right program.  It sounds like you have found a wonderful place for your son to thrive.  It's  an art that helps boys and girls to become comfortable and confident with themselves.

Jason,

The most important thing these programs instill in our children is self esteem...which is a greatly lacking societal problem! JMHO, Thanks,   Fran

Jason, better watch out. Pretty soon, your son may be tougher than his dad. JK.......I think it's a great tool for learning discipline and strengthening a child's self-confidence.

Jason, great blog and I applaud you for allowing your son to get involved in something so wonderful.  I spent years in Martial Arts and still reap the rewards.  The confidence it builds will stay with him for the rest of his life.  Most importantly, he'll learn to stay away from the people who will set out to destroy his psyche. . . and he'll feel good about it!  I wish we had something similar to this out here in Marble Falls.  Peace.

Jason, I never learned martial arts as a child, but have been training in it for over 2 years now as an adult and enjoy all the benefits.  In fact, this past week, my wife went over to my school for a 3 day women's self-defense course and loved it.  Even a little exposure to martial arts can increase anyone's confidence, skills, and fitness.  How nice for you to promote your son's school.

JEFF - It has been a great thing for my son, although I have never studied martial arts myself.  Thanks for stopping by to read my Localism post.

ELAINE - I completely agree.  It is a great source of exercise, fun, and discipline.

FRAN - I utterly agree with you.  This has caused a number of societal ills.

TERI - Actually, you may be right!  He is a pretty tough kid sometimes.

JEM - I appreciate your thoughtful comments.  I hope that it can have a lasting impact on his life as he grows up.

BRIAN - I remember that from your meme a few months ago.  I haven't studied it myself, but I have been very pleased to see the results with my son.

Jason, thanks for sharing with us at I Recommend. As a former educator, I can attest to the benefit of martial arts with children. When taught appropriately, it can really foster self confidence and a good work ethic in children.

JASON - This is something that I want to get my son into at some point, probably over the summer.  We didn't want him to take on too much during his first year of school, so it's only going to be football and baseball for now.  It's great to see that your son is getting so much out of it.
