Home Buying Best of WebOnce again, Forbes has released its Best of the Web Reviews and Rankings for national home buying web sites. The list includes 25 national home buying sites. At the bottom is realestate.com, ranking number 25. At the top is realtor.com, ranking as Forbes' favorite, followed by the top five Forbes Best of the Web picks. I am pleased, humbled and honored to report that my site ranks number one in the top five list.

They are as follows:

  • Realtor.com (Forbes' favorite)
  • Homebuying.About.com
  • Coldwellbanker.com
  • realestate.msn.com
  • quickenloans.com
  • sothebysrealtor.com
The review must be fairly recent since it includes a mention of an article I wrote about disclosing if someone died in the home. It says the best feature of homebuying.about.com is the sheer breadth of my site, and the worst is it needs better organization and a more interesting design. My site is in redesign right now and by the end of February, it will look completely different. So, perhaps next year, that negative will disappear in Forbes' eyes.

Thanks, everybody. I was pretty surprised myself. The thing with writing on the web is you never see the readers, so you never really know who is reading your stuff and whether it's of benefit. Of course, I'd like to think I write worthwhile articles that are of interest and a help to people, but it's nice to get validation, just the same.

Congratulations, Elizabeth!  What a joy to have accomplished so much.  I've actually printed and handed out one of your homebuying.about.com articles at a listing presentation.  After reading your piece on shortsales, my potential listers decided they'd rather save up $ before they list so they can move forward without a short sale. You do have a way of reaching the consumer.

Thanks, Natalie. You know, sshh, but I often print out stuff from my homebuying site and take them to listing presentations, too. The points I make aren't always on the top of my head, and they come more easily when I'm relaxing in front of the computer, giving thought to what I am writing. It's different when you're talking a mile a minute, like I do. But I'm happy to hear that a piece on my site was useful. Thanks for letting me know.

I'm searching inf on quickenloans.com that doesn't come from their own site and found this. Do you know or know anyone who does know if Quicken loans is a good place to go through?

Personally, Sharon, I advise all my clients to use a local mortgage broker. Because if something goes wrong, and if often does, at least you can meet with the lender face-to-face to straighten it out. In addition, the rates offered by local mortgage brokers are the same or often better than you can find online. It's been my experience that listing agents place a lot of importance on a buyer using a lender the agent knows and trusts to close the transaction. Fair or not, deals written with a preapproval or prequal letter from an online lender don't carry the same amount of weight in my local market in Sacramento.

Thanks! I decided to clean up my credit and make sure I use a reputable mortgage broker. I want my first experience to be a good one. Thanks again!
