Things to do near Red Feather Lakes- Deadman Fire Tower

Real Estate Agent with United Country Ponderosa Realty, Red Feather Lakes, Colorado

Deadman Fire Tower, Red Feather Lakes, CO

A few weeks ago, we decided to drive up to the Deadman Fire Tower one Monday with the grandkids.

Now, there are 2 things wrong with going on a Monday – the first one being that the tower is not open and we couldn’t climb the stairs to the top.

The second “problem”, according to our grandson is that the Wandering Moose in the Village is closed on Monday’s and you can’t stop in and get a piece of pie. Truthfully, I don’t even know if they have pie but he’s convinced that they do!

But, Monday was our day to spend with the grandkids, so we made the best of it- even without getting to the top of the tower and with a picnic lunch, instead of pie.

The view from the ground was a little hazy because of wildfires in nearby states- but it was pretty spectacular just the same.  We vowed to return on a day that we could climb the 54 stairs all the way to the top, because a trip to the Deadman Fire Tower near Red Feather Lakes, CO is a trip worth making more than once.

It’s a level 6 road up to the Fire Tower and the road usually closes in late fall and doesn’t re-open until all the spring snow has melted away.  It hasn’t been fully staffed since the 70s but volunteer lookouts are there during the summer weekends to provide information and tours.

From inside, a fire lookout has a 360 degree view for miles.  They could calibrate the exact location of a fire with an instrument especially designed for that purpose. That instrument, as well as period furniture still remains in the cab of the Deadman Lookout Tower.

You can find the Deadman Lookout Tower on the National Historic Lookout Register. The current Fire Tower, built in 1960-61 replaced the wooden one built in the late 1930s. It’s 55 feet high and is the last of eight historic towers in the Front Range of Northern Colorado and Southern Wyoming.

That's the problem with climbing those fire towers is that you actually have to climb up, one leg at a time, and, well, I'm getting exhausted just thinking about all of that work!

Mary, you better listen to your grandson!  The Wandering Moose menu definetly said CLOSED MONDAY,   and with the restaurant serving chicken and gravy what could be a better dessert than PIE to go with it?

Loved the pictures and the history of the fire tower.

What a beautiful view from way up there.  Sounds like a great excursion, and I agree that a piece of pie, preferably some kind of berry, would be the only thing that could improve on your day with the grandies!

Mary, that tower looks like grand kids would LOVE exploring the area!   Too bad it was closed on Monday, maybe you can get there another day.

Hi Mary!   You do have fun with those grandkids of yours!  Say, are you going to make us follow the link to find out how the tower got its name, DEADMAN Fire Tower???  Quite an ominous sounding name!!!

Thanks William, now that they're back in school- no more Mondays :-( so our days will have to be on the weekends I guess!

Hi Jeffrey, it is quite the tower!  I thought the sky was a little funky due to fires as far as California...but glad to say our normal clear blue skies have returned.  Thanks for coming by Jeffrey!

Hi Janna, I agree, pie would make the day!  Nice to see you again, thanks Janna!

Joan, we will HAVE to go back and get to the top, no way around it! LOL  Thanks Joan, hope you have a good day today.

Hi Bruce, we do have fun with them! You know, I don't know how Deadman Mountain,  or the tower there got it's name, I'm just guessing if you got stuck up there in winter - you would be one! :-)
