Don't Sweat the Small Stuff: How to Save Big on Smaller Expenses

Small costs can add up.

For example, when renovating your home, a quick paint touch-up or new curtains may not seem like much money, but as the projects start piling up, you could be spending thousands of dollars.

You can find ways to save on seemingly cheap expenses that, in the long run, will amount to a large chunk of change. Eating out for lunch every day, for example, adds up extremely quickly, so packing your lunch is a great way to lower your food budget.

Here are 3 ways you can keep lunch costs low:

1. Ditch the deli: Instead of buying expensive deli meat, purchase chicken breasts on sale and cook them yourself. You can slice the meat for sandwiches or shred it for chicken salad.

2. Switch the starch: Buy sandwich materials when they are on sale. Instead of sticking to bread, mix it up and buy tortillas, pitas or sandwich thins, depending on which is cheapest.

3. Leverage your leftovers: Save yourself money and prep time by reusing last night’s dinner for your kid’s lunch.

Does anyone have other tips to cutting lunch costs while still keeping the meal delicious?

Ilyce:  I can speak from personal experience on this one ... all three suggestions above work.  It's a rare day that I head-out to buy my lunch.  The only time being when I have a business lunch or meeting with a referral partner, etc.  I'm eating healthier because of doing so .. and have saved real bucks too.  Seems like I accomplish much more this way too ... so lots of reasons to continue this good habit ...

Not only is eating out expensive it is hard (soft?) on the waistline. Many restaurants lunch deals have more than the recommended calorie intake for an entire day!

Gene-

Great point; you not only save money, but eat healthier as well!

It's depressing, isn't it? Also, a lot of the time, if you want to purchase a healthy, organic meal, the price shoots up even higher.
