Do You Ever Get Stuck in Grammar's Attic?

Huh?   Do you mix a metaphor?  Fall into a spelling swamp?   Mis-use a word or phrase?   I don’t know about you but I always have lots of questions about the subject of grammar and the English language.

Whether(not weather which is always a blog-worthy topic thanks to Mark Twain) you are new or a seasoned blogger do you ever feel you need some assistance?

I subscribe to copyblogger.com and receive a daily email with lots of valuable advice.  Today I read -- 10 Grammar Mistakes that Can Keep Your Content from Spreading.

Some of my favorite abuses:

1.  using that when you should use who

3.  starting a sentence with There is or There are

4.  writing bullets that don’t match up

8.  using over rather than more than

Interesting and good discussion.  Most of us do need the additional coaching (?) regarding use of various words in the English language.  Thanksfor the link also.

Michael:  I remember one time when I was selling a new home, the buyer got into a disagreement with the on-site sales rep about the hard-surface counter tops.  They were not included, but the buyer was "taking it for granite" that they were.  (LOL)

Karen Anne -- so were you able to "cement" the contract?

Michael:  Yes I was, and my comment should have been a "concrete example" of that.  Sometimes things are just "hard" to understand.

By the way... just for fun, here... many folks mistakenly call their driveway a "cement" driveway.  The "cement" is actually the powder that, when mixed with the aggregate and other materials, bings them together to form the concrete.

Karen Anne -- oops I meant to write concrete and it came out as cement --- like Jethro Bodine from the Beverly Hillbillies and that ceeeeeement pond in the back 40...

This was so much fun to read and the comments and interactions made it even better.  Should one start a sentence with this?  I'm going to subscribe to the grammar "thingy" email :)

Michael,

Thank you for including that link, which I will use because I need it. I believe I run afoul of what I have learned from simply being in a hurry. I am pleased that you brought this subject up as I am a new blogger and just became a rain maker two days ago. Perhaps I can start off on the (correct) foot. Oh, by the way; the comments on your blog are fun to read (in a word smithy way). (I think I use parentheses too often.) (I can't even remember where I picked up this bad habit. (I sometimes even use double parentheses.)) (:o}›

Hi Dana -- you're welcome.  Running afoul, being in a hurry and simply forgetting what I should know are all well-known to me.   Like you, I think use(and over-use) parentheses and definitely way too many....

Welcome to ActiveRain and best wishes as you blog and post away...(oops).

Michael:  Sometimes, some of us find it necessary to both watch our grammar, AND use Spell-Check.  Even though I used to teach Spelling when I taught in Elementary School... I hit the Spell-Check button for every post and every comment.

Cute title. Bad grammar used to drive me up the wall, but now I've loosened up and sometimes do this myself.

Karen Anne - what you write is right or is it what you right is write?   Spell check is very useful but can things can also go awry when using it.  This reminds me of the auto-correct function too.   Yesterday, I saw a post on facebook from grammarly -- a great website too -- it was a cartoon  with the caption "it appears that autocorrect has become my worst enema"

http://www.grammarly.com/ or like 'grammarly' on facebook

Lynda - we are always evolving aren't we?  Grandma says that's a good thing and she said it well.  (I think)

I do love copyblogger. I get their emails every day and always enjoy them. As for mangled metaphors, I get a kick out of people who mangle cliches, saying things like: That's water under the dam; or When it doesn't rain it pours. I'm also a grammar and spelling nut but I don't criticize anyone individually (except for my kids). As writers, though, we should all try to get our message out as clearly as possible. Poor grammar does detract from the message.

Hi Susan -- Glad you enjoy copyblogger too.   I mangle and mingle our language(and a few others) with the greatest of ease on my flying trapeze.

Michael... similar to your comment on "auto-correct"... about a month ago I was just finishing a post I wrote about the Ordination of a Woman Priest.

I hit spell check, and the little gnomes who inhabit that little Spell-Check entity didn't like the word "ordination."  They wanted to substitute "urination."  Seriously.  I chose to stay with Ordination.  The Sister who was ordained... agreed.

Karen Anne -- all I can add to your comment regarding ordination vs urination is YIKES(a word that Spell-Check has deemed acceptable - this time).
