I don't remember where I first read this quote but it made an indelible impression on me. I typed it out and have it hanging above my desk. With each transaction I take these words to heart and attempt to do one action which will leave the client utterly amazed and happy.

I find it is more interesting if I tailor my closing gift to each client. For the last transaction I surprised the buyer at closing by paying for his home warranty. For my seller closing today I have purchased a gift card for two admission to the Glen Ivy Hot Springs Spa. I am hoping both she and her husband take advantage of this quick get-away nestled in the hills of Santa Ana mountain range.

In his book Less Blah Blah more Ah Ha Ken Brand talks about the same concept and ideas. He recommends that for agents seeking to exceed the shadow of mediocrity the difference is "knowing what others don't and doing what others won't." Inspirational words for an agent desiring to offer an excellent customer experience. The newest catch phrase is "customer experience" which embraces a greater scope than the passe term "customer service." 

Every member of the Agent's team must embrace the idea of providing an excellent customer experience to each and every client; from the assistant, transaction coordinator, Escrow Officer, Home Inspector, etc-era. Anyone who interacts with the client must be on the same page as you - the Rainmaker.

Recently I have spent quite a bit of time mulling over this concept wondering how to continue building my brand and my reputation within my community. Systems appear to be an integral part of this idea. Rather than winging it I have committed to drafting my checklist for listings, buyers and short sales. This tool will help to keep the moving parts of a transaction in synchronization. I will not forget to email the person who provided a referral because the checklist will keep me on track. My systems combined with a resolution to always seek out ways to amaze my clients should help in my endeavors to exceed the mundane.

This quote from Maya Angelou seems very appropiate.  " I've learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel."

Kristal:  Excellent post ... loved it!  With all that must be talked about and covered within the typical/average mortgage transaction these days, it's easy to overlook the "niceties" that used to be more commonplace.  You can get caught-up in the details of the transaction and overlook the details of the human being your providing service for.  Maybe I need the same saying having over my desk that you have above yours ... I'm thinking it'd be a great reminder for me to SLOW DOWN and see the real person before me ....

I love that statement.  I find it very difficult to find the right gift for my clients and sometimes end up buying a banal gift.  I need to leave to be more creative with my gifts.  I like your idea of a checklist for transaction and others.  Really great idea.

I like to have the closing gift be something that's just a nice way to end moving. Like a gift card for milkshakes so the new owners and their kids can get a treat after all the hard work.

Kristal, I also give closing gifts and try to personalize them. One easy thing I did this week..but it made a big impact...was brought lunch to my buyers who were moving in.  Cost me about $25 and they were so grateful!
