Jockeying a soda can to the Moon with courage and determination.
Richard Weisser did a nice job reminding us of the courage of Neil Armstrong and the other astronauts in 1969. It was space travel in its infancy.
In the 60's school would virtually stop all normal activities on the day of lift off. Our teacher would tune the rabbit eared television to the one of 5 channels that got the news about the incredible launching. Those were memorable days.
Hey NASA could send up a spaceship a week as far as we were concerned. No subjects for half the day!
Neil Armstrong, I salute you sir and those fun school memories because of men like you.
It is hard to fathom the depth of the accomplishment of sending men to the moon and returning them safely …in 1969!
Computers were in their infancy, and much of the work was theoretical. It had been less than 66 years since the Wright Brothers made the first powered flight. A bit of interesting trivia: the total distance of the first powered flight was less than one-third the height of the Saturn V Rocket.
Everything had to be invented and built from scratch, including a building tall enough to house the rocket and a transporter capable of moving the craft to the launch pad.
But in 1969, determination overcame every limitation that blocked the path to the Moon.
During the historic final descent to the lunar surface, the primitive computers became overloaded and were unable to control the lander. Undaunted, Neil Armstrong took the controls in hand and with less than 20 seconds of fuel remaining, calmly landed on the Sea of Tranquility.
“Contact light.” “Shutdown.” “Engine Stop.”…
“Houston, Tranquility Base here, the Eagle has landed.”
Thank you Neil Armstrong. You will never be forgotten.
