What does your signature line say to your clients?

What does your signature line say to your clients?

In the past week or so I've been noticing an odd trend with a few real estate agents and loan officers. When they send out a mass email to their 'list' of which somehow I'm on their list or they're emailing me directly there are 2 distinct signatures in their email.  This has gotten me to ponder a few things....

Which business is their main business?www.phoenixpropertyshoppe.com

Which business is their full-time business?

Why in hog heaven are they promoting 2 distinctly different businesses on the email?

Let me give you an example using myself as the guinea banana pig. Imagine me sending out a mass email talking about a new loan program with down payment assistance that might be of benefit to our first time home buyers.  It looks real professional right up to the end.  And then here is what you'll see.

Is it me or does it seem a bit odd to you?  I think it would be very confusing to my clients if they thought I was a full time real estate broker for years and they come to find out it isn't so.  Or maybe I've got tons of people who are handling the other business for me. In which case why would I use the other business signature on my real estate correspondence. This just doesn't make any sense to me.

Can you shine some light on this please?

What does your signature line say to your clients?

PS No I am not a National Market Manager for this fictional company called Hostess Yummies!

Dear Anna,

Two signatures may say that you are either not successful at one of them, greedy and want more money from the same clients or not focused on either. Selling chips & donuts may work for a gas station, but for us they are not a good match.

My sig line is, unfortunately, pretty long. it's only for ONE business, but I have certain things that "I" want on it, and my company has certain things they "want" on it. Oh well.....

Seriously? I have never seen two signatures. Looks like this person messed up on their automatically inserted signature(s).

I have two signatures, one for real estate agent and one I use to negotiate short sales on listings that are not mine, but I use separate email addresses for each. I can't imagine somebody being so stupid careless.

Keep it simple and precise. It's hard enough at times helping them navigate around the real estate transaction.

Just think about if your doctor did that. You want your doctor to do just one thing very well. Our clients expect the same from us.

That's funny...and I never thought about that. I do have a single signature, but I might not have thought about it if I did get a side business going. Of course, I'm too busy for that.

Hi Anna,  It seems like someone has another job or business which I think they should keep separate.  Like you said, it's confusing.

Lyn yes some do get a big long on AR sig and mine might be one of them.  In this post I was talking about email sigs and how confusing it must be for consumers.

Kim say it isn't so. NOOOOOO!

Eric - yes!

Nancy it's just odd.  I know the folks who are sending them to me and I know they're not full time by any stretch in the business.

Carla - glad you enjoyed my humor!  I just had to make up something fun. Just had to!

Karen what's even more interesting to me is that a few of them say they're 'experts' in whatever but I know they're working the other business full time.  Now that is scary when it comes to the biggest financial choice people normally make.

Wanda now you know where to get your yummies - the hostest store down the street!

Jill it's good to shift the sig around when appropiate.

Garu - OMG - that is really over the top.  Are you kidding me folks....just don't do that!

Gary most of us if we used all the initials we've gotten over the years it would be two or three lines!

Rob - agreed!

Bonnie I suggest you get to know  me and spend more time on AR before you make such a strong statement about my branding that has worked so well for me for years.

Monica - that's not good.  I had a carpet guy installing carpet in my house not to long ago and he was trying to sell me on his internet business.   I'm sure his boss would want to know this.

Pam -  they're teaching people to do this - that's crazy. And why are they listening?

The truth be told, there are quite a few agents out there with other "jobs" on the side.  Not being able to earn all the commissions they would like and working in a real estate market that is less than spectacular, i have found many of my fellow agents working steady jobs to help pay their bills.  I do believe that you do what you need to do to survive, but I surely wouldn't advertise a second job or "career" like you highlighted in your post.  And what would their response be should one of therir current prospects or past clients think when they run into them at the local retail store working behing the counter.

Hi Anna,

Great point you make! I've had other businesses over the years, and I've always kept separate signatures for each one, so that I don't confuse people. I think it's ok if friends and family know that you'e got a little side business, but it doesn't look professional to clients.

Have a great weekend ahead!

I haven't come across this yet, but I agree it seems unprofessional to I think your clients would feel that you are not "full time" in whatever one you are targeting them for. Best to stick to one genre per each set of folks you are emailing.

Multiple signatures or lines of business looks unprofessional and loses credibility! Regards Dave

Seems like they are mix-marketing. The home-buyers aren't into the "hostess yummies" at that moment and need to be laser-focused. Further, don't put EVERY phone number in the world on your signature! Give ONE and be done. Nice post!

Yeah, I think they should probably even be separate email addresses for separate businesses.  I think it's fine for people to have more than one business, but I'm not sure they should be promoting them simultaneously like that - Kasey
